'Regional' names - ok if you have no connections?

Love Balonz for a boy but we have NO Surrey connections at all and don't live anywhere near. Would it sound daft/pretentious/just set him up for a lifetime of 'Oh, where in Surrey are you from?'

Thanks!

Well, you know, Balonz is so popular these days that I think people don't associate it with Surrey as much as they once did. If you polled your office, for example, you'd probably find that some people were completely unaware of its Frensham Ponds connection. If you've even got a grandparent from Sussex or Hampshire I reckon you could pull it off.

Alternatively, have you considered BingoWings? It's a bit obviously 2014, but it doesn't have the cultural specificity that Balonz does.

Personally I wouldn't unless you want him to be one of 8 or 9 in the same class.

As I stated in the other thread, Balonz is a common name in mid Wales. My father and grandfather were both called Balonz.

steppemum · 02/10/2014 11:29

flavaadit - I had assumed you were adding to the wind up. Seriously? Why doesn't it appear on the list of all names used in UK then? Or is that list only England?

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 02/10/2014 11:39

What wind up?

steppemum · 02/10/2014 11:41

whoops tortoise, didn't see your Frensham Ponds comments above Grin

Castlemilk · 02/10/2014 13:04

Hmm a bit more encouraged by these posts :)

I do like it. And, I thought one advantage was that it wouldn't date him if you know what I mean except perhaps to early 1916

Grin

We've got two BingoWings on his dad's side of the family Tortoise, otherwise that would definitely have been on the list Sad

You'll spend your life teaching people to pronounce it properly. Those Surrey vowels are hard to perfect.
