Please help us name baby - pagan/nature names

(41 Posts)

Hi all - DH and I are expecting our much wanted first and only child (due to fertility reasons I won't be having any more). We don't know if its a boy or girl, but we are finding it absolutely impossible to agree on names.
We have agreed that middle name for girl will be Rose, and for boy will be Andrew (both family names).

However, my husband's first choice of boys names are James and Daniel. Both ok names, but I am a Pagan and would rather not use biblical names. They are also quite popular and I'd prefer something less traditional.

I love the names Cory, Rowan and Leo. Hubby hates them all!

Please can you help us find names that are traditional/normal sounding enough for DH, but have a non-Christian meaning behind it?? I am 39+1 and freaking out that we are still at odds on naming baby!

In biblical astrology, Leo the lion symbolizes Jesus. I'm not trying to put you off, just pointing out that a non-Christian meaning to a name might not be as simple or easy as you reckon.

How about:

Rowan
Flora
Summer
Autumn

Girls

Summer
Jade
Lily
Willow
Amber
Celeste
Aurora
Savannah (treeless plain)

Boys
Dylan (means Sea)
Hunter
Brody
Cameron
Seth

Might the ancient religions might be less obvious than those centres on the three Books?

Isis, Iris, Juno, Artemis?

Alexander, Lysander?

Ooh I didn't know that Pottering, I thought it simply meant lion!

I might get hubby to concede on Dylan... Sounds normal but has a lovely meaning. I LOVE Lysander but I can picture the look on hubby's face now...!

Given that Christianity ripped off a lot of pagan festivals, does it matter too much?

What about Aeron, Aiden, Bronwyn, Connor, Seren?

Iggly Wed 06-Mar-13 08:45:51

Or names from trees like

Olive, Ash, Hazel?

Thanks Iggly, I don't think I would mind so much if the meanings for the names hubby likes weren't "Gods gift" and "judged by God" - it just doesn't sit right with me. Sorry if it seems silly.

Bronwyn is beautiful smile

Iggly Wed 06-Mar-13 09:54:25

Yes I love the name Bronwyn.

It's 'Bronwen' though - in Welsh, 'wen' is a feminine ending and 'wyn' masculine, so Bronwyn as a girl's name looks really odd.
