Adeline - nickname?

We're keen on Adeline Elizabeth - the middle names of our mums - though would ideally want a short version. We already have an 'Attie' in the extended family (nn for Atticus which really gets pronounced Addie) - so thinking maybe 'Adie' - as in 'Sadie'. Though we have an Amy too... Thoughts?

I know an Adeline. She pronounces it Adder-leen rather than Adder-line, and her nn is Addie.

Or the obvious, Adele, which is a name in its own right.

Why not chose a name you dont want to shorten? Can't see the point giving one name and calling them something else!

Adele, Della or Lina.

(Heidi is short for Adelheid (an old-fashioned German version of Adelaide) in the book that popularised it. I think there are other German names ending in -heid that it would also have been used for.)

It sounds like you are giving your child a name you do not really like just to honour your mums?

The Adelene I know (she was Adeline on birth cert but her parents changed it to Adelene when she was little) - who is sometimes Addie - goes by Adelene with all her friends/at work, etc etc. It's just close family who shorten it.

Don't see the prob though with shortening names - it happens to loads of people with long names.

I think out of all these options, the pronunciation Aid-dee would be the nicest but not sure how you would spell it....Adey, Adie?
