Pronounced Mah-ree

WDYT? Means star of the sea. I don't like Maria or Mariah btw.

As a first name btw.

It is french for Mary, but sounds better.
It doesn't mean star of the sea, actually nobody exactly know the meaning, best guests are "the nurturing one", "sea of knowledge" "sea of bitterness"...

If you want a sea related name why not Marine?

Lovely name imo, and nice paired with another French name as a mn. Marie Therese, Marie Louise, Marie Claire, Marie Chantal..

I've seen Mairie. How would that be pronounced? Is it Irish rather than French?

I love Marie (Mah-ree) but agree with what has already been said in that she'll be called Ma-ree, more often than not. I'd even say that others would assume you're mispronouncing Ma-ree.

I'd need to use some other spelling to signify the emphasis on 'Mah' if it was my baby Or go for Marnie, or another ocean-related name.

To out myself, this is my name, and I spend my life correcting spellings (most people assume it must by Mary?) or how its said.

I am sure my parents didn't think there would be any difficulty with how it is spelt or said. But, trust me, I spend my life doing just that.

It's nice but I agree she'll be called MaRee non-stop.

I like it but only pronounced the usual way, with the emphasis on the first syllable it would really grate with certain accents and most people will pronounce it with the usual emphasis on the second syllable.

I like the usual Marie too, and Maria and Marnie.

Mairie means mayor's office or town hall in French.

Yawn city!! People will still call her marie no matter how you insist on pronouncing it.

I was just going to suggest what Silent Mammoth said; why not spell it Mhairi? In Scotland, this is very popular and is mostly pronounced 'Marry' not 'MuRee', (although I know one or 2 in the highlands who pronounce it 'Varry' - sorry to confuse things!!).

Mhairi is the vocative case of the name Mairi. You would use it to call Mairi in for her dinner.

Mhairi is pronounced Var-ee. The H changes the M to a V sound (same in Irish).

I adore Mhairi. I knew a Mhairi when I was a child - she must have been about 20 and mannnnnn she was cool. I wanted to be her when I grew up. I really hope she's doing something fabulous.
