Hi

We are looking for Scottish names and have thought of lots that we like but are not sure that we love any of them. We like names that are not overly popular/common, but do not like anything made-up sounding. We have tested some ideas out by subtly dropping them in conversation with friends but to date these ideas have been met with hoots of laughter! shock confused Having seen some of the great ideas you have come up with for other people, I thought I would put it out there...

For girls the current shortlist is: Flora, Ishbel, Florence and Kate Anne.

For boys it is: Archie (a family name but concerned it is too popular at present), Blair, Cameron, Hamish, Gregor, Monty, Ruaridh, Ranald and Lorne.

Any thoughts/ ideas...?

Love Florence, Hamish and Ruaridh. I like Lewis and Diarmid too.

How about Angus? Or Struan? We have a Magnus, which we pass off as Scottish because it was inspired by our trips to Orkney where it's very popular.

Those are lovely names. Sometimes you have to wait and see your baby and you'll just know what suits him/her.
I also like Iona, Ailish, Angus, Ross.

Love Hamish (Scottish version of James). Ruaraidh has so many spellings that it gets a bit confusing. Lots of boys have names that are also sirnames (e.g. Cameron, Fraser). Ranald is a good name.

Also love Angus, Dougal, Donald

Any thoughts? Lorne is a square sausage.
Other than that they're all nice.

I am Iona btw, and my brother is Fraser.

Oh and my mother was Flora.

Innes, Rory, Calum, Seamus?

I like Fraser and Ross (or have briefly fancied boys with those names anyway). Don't know girls names though...

Love Flora

Lennox for a boy? Tis an elderly relative's middle name and have always liked it.

The names you have chosen are mostly lovely, strong names. I will only advise that the word 'aodan' is the Gaelic word for face and I have never heard of anyone named this and that Coreen is a very nice French name usually spelt Corrinne (maybe 1 r and 2 ns or vice versa, not exactly sure).

I have also found that names which are surnames, e.g. Innes, Fraser, Ross, Cameron, Lewis from above, can be a tad confusing...e.g. a boy could be named Cameron Ross with Ross being the surname or vice versa...just saying, doesn't make them horrid names or anything.

As far as I know Ruaraidh only has one correct spelling, the one I have written.

I love the name Lachie!

For girls combining two names seems very Scottish - Kate Ann, mentioned above, Margaret Anne etc

Florence isn't Scottish on origin- it is English or french or Italian according to wikipedia.

Thank you all for your input, much appreciated. I shall sit DH down this weekend and hit him with your ideas wink

Lorne = Sausage, sorry.
Other than that, they're all good. Ranald is a great name and I don't know that many.

I love Cameron and Ishbel from your list.

I also like Keir and Fraser for a boy.

Orla for a girl? It's Irish rather than Scottish, though.

CarriMarie Fri 08-Feb-13 22:33:48

I've recently heard of a baby called Archer, nn Archie, also love Cameron and Gregor. Like Flora and Ishbel or girls.

MoppingMummy Fri 08-Feb-13 22:51:56

Ishbel is gorgeous

HouseOfBears Fri 08-Feb-13 23:05:15

Ooh I love Archer! Also like Fraser or Murray for a boy. For a girl I think Flora is gorgeous.
