Is Megan dated or a classic?

Hi, I've been looking at some old threads about names DH and I like for DD and someone mentioned that Megan is a 90s name?

Do you agree? Was it in fashion a few years ago and now sounds dated. I really like it and had thought it was timeless but now am not so sure. Also do you know many Megans?

The youngest Megan I know of is about 4 or 5.

If you like it, go for it.

Classic

It's such an old name it can't really be dated. It did go through a spell of being particularly popular about 10-12 years ago.

But Hannah was wildly popular amongst my age group and one couldn't call it dated!

Definitely a classic. It's a lovely name.

I love it, if I'd had a girl she would have been Megan, nn Meg. Go for it!

I like it a lot ;)

Not overused (round here anyway) but yet not obscure enough to require spelling out.

Megan is lovely. My friends little girl is Megan, she's only 10 months.

We have a Megan so I obviously love it. She is 20 months. I agree it is a classic that isn't too popular at the mo.

I wouldn't exactly call it a classic. There did seem to be clutches of Megans and then none for a while. But that's true of a lot of names.

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 30-Dec-12 13:35:28

It's always been well used in Wales,I suppose that's why I see it as a classic.

Megan was our first choice baby name for a while, but we went off it when we realised there are about 20 different ways of spelling it - would it bother you if it got spelled incorrectly a lot?

RillaBlythe Sun 30-Dec-12 17:17:45

It feels dated to me but in fact I only know one, a 4 year old.

FunnysInLaJardin Sun 30-Dec-12 17:19:22

my sister is Megan and she is coming up to 58, so classic name to me. The only other one I know is 14

GalaxyDisaStar Sun 30-Dec-12 18:13:18

That might have been me blush.

I agree it is a classic in Wales.

Where I grew up, in the south west, there was a massive glut about 15 years ago. I knew a lot of Megan/Beth sibling pairs too (as in, I can think of three off the top of my head). Then, probably because everyone knew so many, it dropped off.

So, to me, it is a dated name. Not in a nasty way, just very 'of its time'. Much like I think Milly/Tilly/Grace will feel in a few years.

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 30-Dec-12 18:16:53

There's only one way of spelling Megan.

The rest well,wrong.

LemonBreeland Sun 30-Dec-12 18:16:57

It seems to have been a very popular name over the past few years. I know several Megans aged 4 to about 8.

Personally I think it is quite a harsh sounding name and really don't like it.

Pochemuchka Sun 30-Dec-12 18:32:47

I don't think it's a classic but it's not awful either.
To me it's just a bit blah.

Like the nn Meg for an older girl/teenager though, I think it sounds quite 'cool' not that I'm anything of the sort!

I have a Meg (who is just Meg), but also like Megan.

jessjessjess Sun 30-Dec-12 18:34:55

I love Megan. It's probably our first choice for a girl.

delilah88 Sun 30-Dec-12 18:42:21

Terribly dated I think, sorry! And also it sounds American.

delilah88 Sun 30-Dec-12 18:42:42

*But not as bad as Tegan!

GW297 Sun 30-Dec-12 18:44:34

Megan is a lovely name.

Karen2012 Sun 30-Dec-12 18:53:00

I love it - not dated at all...

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 30-Dec-12 20:21:40

delilah

How can it "sound American"? It is Welsh.
