I am about to try to knit a beret where I have to use 2 strands of yarn at the same time. Is this going to be tricky? or are there any particlar problems I should look out for.

Shouldn't be an issue at all - just make sure you always knit through both threads. Oh, and it's easier to knit with a thread coming from each of two balls, rather than trying to knit from the outside and the inside of one ball simultaneously (if you see what I mean).

Put each ball of wool in an empty carton with a lid - poke a hole in the lid and thread the yarn through. That way they will not become tangled.

I agree, it is easy to knit with two balls of yarn at once - just be careful in the beginning as you can easily knit with just one thread on a few stitches without realising, but if you concentrate for the first few rows you then get the hang of it. I would also knit using the thread from the outside of both yarn balls as i find there is more chance for tangles if i take the thread from the inside. If you just have one yarn ball to use then wind off half of it before you start ( you can always weigh it to check if it is about half - most balls weigh 50gr so aim for 25gr) and that way you can use the yarn as two balls.
