Does anyone have any experience of which ones are best? I've spent ages browsing but would like some personal recommendations.

Thanks!

Thanks Helvetica!

The fabric shop near me is staffed by grumpy people and is not a pleasant shopping experience.

I worry about the quality if buying online. I could order swatches I suppose.

I almost bought from Abakhan - I say almost because they add on so many extra charges - vat, postage, packing etc - that my £17pm silk came to a total of £25pm. Not impressed.

I think the truly awful cluttered website is fabricland You have to order over the phone though (not through the site) I am very lucky that I can visit a branch!

I was also recommended this site, but have yet to order - croft mill

ElderberrySyrup I wonder if your grumpy fabric shop is the same one I'm thinking it is? - Is it in South-East London?

ElderberrySyrup · 07/11/2011 20:06

no, not SE London Smile

I am sure there are grumpy fabric shops all over! I was thinking of starting a thread about 'what are the grumpy shops near you?', I bet a lot would be fabric....

On phone so can't link, but my favourites are:
MacCulloch and Wallis (not cheap but good range)
Raystitch
Liberty (if paying through the nose is ok with you)
Dots n stripes
And there's penine outdoor for crazy fleece/goretex/nylon etc fabric

ElderberrySyrup · 09/11/2011 10:18

thanks everyone.

Hopefully, you are clearly a quality fabrics kind of girl! I love the Liberty corduroy dress on your blog, btw.

I've found the thing I want on Abakhan and yes, the postage is absurd - they only ship by courier.

Fabricland seems to have a branch near MIL, so that will be a treat for the whole family next time we go down there

btw - Hopefully, I have just started this thread on feminism and vintage dress; wonder if you have any thoughts?

As said above, Fabricland are amazing. They have a shop near to us and I spend far too much money in there! I've never ordered online from them but the materials look true to what is in the shop. Certainly in store they are very generous with their measurements.

There is a well known (certainly on the south coast) fabric chain also near us (not south London) where the staff are so grumpy I wonder anyone goes in there. Even though it's three miles away and Fabricland is 15, I do the journey every time.

musicposy · 10/11/2011 00:37

I also used this place once and found them good.

Will have a proper read in a moment elderberry but am v tickled that much of the discussion is around my sister's blog! (tuppence ha'penny vintage)

ElderberrySyrup · 10/11/2011 11:28

It's a really good blog Hopefully!

try www.seamstar.co.uk orfancymoon.co.uk I especially love the seamstar site but fancymoon had a brilliant range of fabrics

sunshinenanny · 13/11/2011 16:18

I used to use Fabricland till I found them rude and unhelpful and have never set foot in one since and I am not a difficult customer, quite the reverse.
