To want a Poetry board?

instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 12:57

As far as I can see, there's not a Poetry board on MN which seems like a damn shame (unless it's categorised somewhere else, if so please point me there).

I have so many poems I would like to discuss, and MN seems like it would be a great place to do it! Anybody agree or disagree?

Do you mean your own poems?

instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 13:09

Not my own, mainly other people's poems but I think it would be cool if people could show their own as well! I'm really enjoying Kim Addonizio at the moment Grin

I love a bit of poetry too.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/12/2020 13:29

Nice idea.

What should it be called, other than the obvious 'Poetry Corner'?Grin

Beachcomber74 · 26/12/2020 13:31

Yes I’d love a poetry board. A poem for everyday of the year edited by Allie Esiri was my favourite gift. Great if you want to read something at night but don’t have time for a whole chapter!

Lockheart · 26/12/2020 13:33

If you want a new board you'd be best posting in Site Stuff to let them know. Good luck!

instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 13:33

That's a good question @ErrolTheDragon, one to which I may not be creative enough to answer Grin

If anyone has any name ideas (or knows how to ask MNHQ for this) I'd be very appreciative!

And thank you for the suggestion, @Beachcomber74, I'll have a Google for that Smile I'm glad there are fellow MNers who enjoy poetry!

OP posts:
instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 13:35

Sorry just read that, @Lockheart. I'll put up a thread in Site stuff now!

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 26/12/2020 13:41

If you've not already made a new thread, just report your OP to MNHQ, ask them to move it and say "please".

I suppose we should try to come up with some poetic requests. Haikus and limericks are the traditional MN forms. Grin

instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 13:43

I've just made one in "Site Stuff" unfortunately, sorry I'm not especially technologically savvy Grin.

Could probably through some sonnets and free-verse poems in the mix as well!

MNHQ, can we have a Poetry Forum? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/4116327-MNHQ-can-we-have-a-Poetry-Forum

instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 13:49

That's the one Grin

Mumsnet is for parents I see,
A twenty year old forum it do be,
For chat and comment online,
It seems to have been just fine,
Save one more bit to bring some glee,
A sub-forum for our poetry.

Mysterian · 26/12/2020 14:20

I want to create something festive but I know I can't sew a tree,
But maybe I can try to write some nice Christmas poetry.
I'm not going to rant or lose or decorum,
I'm just going to state that we need a sub-forum
For it.

instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 15:49

Hahaha I love the poems @nosswith and @Mysterian Grin

If everyone can go to this link and express their support for a poetry forum that would be fantastic! MN have expressed interest, but they're looking for people to post support there Smile thank you!

Posted on the Site Stuff thread but adding my support here too.

TheThingWithFeathers · 26/12/2020 16:45

Why don't you just start a poetry thread in What We're Reading (or whatever the books forum is called these days) and see how that goes first?

ikltownofboothlehem · 26/12/2020 16:49

The thing that gets me every time
Is whether poetry should rhyme
Call me an old fashioned fuddy duddy
But I can't get on the with ones that ruddy
Try to be hip or fancy or clever
Or the ones that go on forever and ever
Couplets win they rhyming gold, the quatrains get the silver
Oh bugger. Never mind. As you were....

instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 16:51

@TheThingWithFeathers

I just thought it might be nice to have a specialised area for poetry. "What We're Reading" comes under the Books category, and not all poems are published in anthologies. Also, it would be great if we could mention specific poems as well as general critiques of anthologies themselves, which is a bit trickier in a forum that's more dedicated to fiction / non-fiction.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 26/12/2020 16:55

Poetry isn't often 'what I'm reading' - it comes, half-remembered to mind, or heard on the radio.

Though this has reminded me that I ought to put a book of poems in the loo - I used to have one there, good for those contemplative moments.Grin

instagrampoets · 26/12/2020 17:00

Yes Errol I tend to find poems scrolling through Pinterest or popping up on a site, though I do have a few anthologies on my book shelf! It's not the type of art you tend to read your way through in a sitting though, it has a habit of finding you.

My great uncle in his 80s had begun writing the most marvellous poetry. I've just made an instagram account for him!
