To think I can find a 'child/high user' tablet that can stand the pace?

(I've name changed for this as there's stuff I'll happily tell you lot, that I don't want my friend having to visualise over a cuppa!)

My friend needs a tablet for his DS. For reasons I can't go into, his 7 year old DS uses it for several hours a day, playing games and watching LOTS of YouTube type videos about the games (Minecraft/boom beach etc).

The tablets they've had keep failing within a few days/couple of weeks.

The screens go black & start flashing the brand names (ALBA & Bush). Various things eventually get them going again, but it happens all the time and isn't really workable. A couple of them have had charging issues too.

His DS is a good kid, really not messing about with it or adjusting settings or anything, he just wants to watch his game videos. They have all had virus software, it doesn't appear to be a virus anyway.

He does try to watch it with the tablet stood up on the table rather than on his lap or on a cushion etc so we don't think it's overheating!? But can't totally rule that out, but it happens when on the table too. Is one incidence of over heating enough to cause this reaction long term?

When we were talking about it the other day I suggested the Hudl, but he needs a new tablet today & Tesco aren't selling Hudl's anymore. He's seen some reconditioned ones on eBay but I'm not sure it's a good idea.

He really doesn't want to spend more than £80/£100.

Any suggestions oh wise ones?

We got a kindle fire for £50. In a case, kids have had them a few months now and no problems.

Thanks for your reply, but (I'm pretty sure) the games aren't available for kindles.

We have a lenovo similar to this and it's lasted a couple of years with no issues so far.

My son has autism and we rely heavily on his iPad in public places. It's an iPad mini and was the cheapest model about 2.5 yrs ago and was about £230. It is still in perfect working order. Get a griffin or similar robust case as well. Sometimes it's better to pay more initially for better longevity. And he uses his a lot.

I think, realistically, if he's going to be such a heavy user on an ongoing basis, he's going to need a tablet designed for that usage - and that's not going to be sub £100. A kindle is going to be the best under that price range, or something reconditioned, but there will likely be game access issues on a kindle and any workarounds will put higher pressure on the machine. If he's tried a lot and keeps frying the motherboard, he'll need to reduce usage or increase spend.

Definitely recommend the iPad mini. It means paying more but will be cheaper than paying a £100 every time the crap ones break.

Could he look into getting an iPad with a telephone contract or something? It might help reduce the initial outlay even if he ends up paying more for it longer term.

He really doesn't want to spend as much as it would take to buy an iPad ( he really can't afford it right now) but we did talk about gettng one 'on contract' with his phone, but he can't do that for a few months.

Although he's had 4, each have been replaced due to the issues with them. So he's 'only' spent one lot of money on it so far.

Anchor do you think that is the issue? We thought it might be, but given they do start again we weren't sure it had really fried the motherboard?!

Oh &... I love my iPad mini and I'm on it ALL day, but not playing YouTube videos etc, do think an iPad would stand up to that kind of relentless use? It can be for 5/6 hours at a time.

Problem SORTED.

For now at least. A guy at work has an iPad2 (not sure if mini or what, but doesn't matter either way) that he's going to sell to him for £60, he's going to reset it etc as well. Not sure why the guy is selling it, but for £60 it's worth a punt.

It should, at the very least, hopefully see his DS through until he can get one on his phone contract.
