'Mums with PND are just attention seeking psychopaths'

As said by my 'D'Father.

I suffered horrendously with PND, I was on antidepressants and I have had various sessions involving talking therapy and also CBT.

I was so angry at his comment that I said 'That is a fucking disgusting thing to say'.

It was the one of the worst things that I have been through and now I know exactly why he wasn't bothered about me while I was suffering with this illness. Luckily I came out of the other side after suffering for over a year but it was a long battle for me and I finally saw a light at the end of a dark tunnel and I am proud of it and not ashamed about it at all.

AIBU to be extremely angry at his comment?

YANBU What a cretin

Tortington Fri 22-Mar-13 18:18:38

sounds like an arse - i hope this was a one off, if not i'd fuck him off tbh

YANBU.I had quite severe Pnd bordering on psychosis in the early days. I wasn't attention seeking, but probably should have been. People with your father's opinion of pnd are ignorant and stupid. I can only assume that he doesn't "believe" in depression either. It's just a matter of pulling your socks up and not being a lazy moaner, after all..

Possible response
People who dismiss PND are self-absorbed twats.

Just shock

Marcheline Fri 22-Mar-13 18:35:42

YANBU.

The idea of someone saying that to a person who has suffered from PND makes me feel physically sick.

So sorry your father is such an insensitive twunt.

MaryMotherOfCheeses Fri 22-Mar-13 18:36:03

YANBU.

I take it you don't see much of him.

ouryve Fri 22-Mar-13 18:37:40

What an awful thing to say. I hope your mum didn't have to go through it with that unsupportive attitude sad

highlandbird Fri 22-Mar-13 18:39:04

Yadnbu what an awful thing to say...the last thing I wanted was attention when I had pnd I wanted to hide away in a dark corner by myself and be left alone. sad
No wonder so many women are too ashamed and embarrassed to speak up about it when they get this sort of reaction, I would be raging if my DF said such a thing.

idiuntno57 Fri 22-Mar-13 18:42:41

YANBU

with PND I was suicidal and psychotic by turns. No one who saw me at this time thought I was a hysteric looking for attention.

perhaps he just can't spell psychotopath....

Whathaveiforgottentoday Fri 22-Mar-13 18:48:56

Yanbu, ignorant man

DumSpiroSpero Fri 22-Mar-13 18:49:03

Does your dad normally come out with such ignorant, hurtful rubbish? How is your relationship generally?

My dad is my favourite person in the world after DD but if he came out with something like that I'm pretty certain I'd never speak to him again.

Coping with PND and a newborn was the hardest thing I have ever done.

elliejjtiny Fri 22-Mar-13 18:50:01

YANBU shock. I had PND with DS1 and mild PND with DS2 and DS3. I ended up not telling people (apart from people on forums) because I didn't want attention and because I thought if anyone asked me how I was I'd cry sad

Pilgit Fri 22-Mar-13 18:51:16

YANBU. ignorant twat doesn't get close

idiuntno57 Fri 22-Mar-13 18:53:50

I feel it is a sort of duty to tell everyone (or rather not hide) the details of my illness because so many suffer in silence.
It is only by normalising PND that we're going to get rid of attitudes like his.

SneakyNinja Fri 22-Mar-13 18:54:23

Does he know you suffered from it?!

Still an appalling way of thinking but I need some context. Was he insulting you or just making a general ignorant comment?

paintyourbox Fri 22-Mar-13 18:58:46

Awful! Attitudes like this are what stops people speaking out about mental health problems.

Really glad to hear you have recovered though OP.

YellowandGreenandRedandBlue Fri 22-Mar-13 19:01:03

YANBU. That is an idiotic pov.

Wolfiefan Fri 22-Mar-13 19:01:16

YANBU. You were ill. Congratulations on your recovery. You SHOULD be proud.
He's an arse!

KatyTheCleaningLady Fri 22-Mar-13 19:05:36

If you ever engage him again on the subject, tell him that psychopathy is a personality trait that can't be cured but that people can and do get over PND all the time.

Loulybelle Fri 22-Mar-13 19:06:53

Right up there with Tom Cruise, "It can be cured by taking Vitamins"

Poppet48 Fri 22-Mar-13 19:23:23

We have never had a close relationship, we used to but this isn't the worst thing that he has said/done.

He knew I was suffering with it and how difficult life was to live with it. The comment was about all women that suffer from PND not just myself.

Thank you so much for the replies, I didn't know if I was unreasonably angry as it is an extremely sensitive subject for me but it feels good to know that I am not the only one who feels this way.

Asheth Fri 22-Mar-13 19:30:16

bad enough for anyone to express these views. But for a father to their child who suffered this... words fail me. Glad you're better now. x
