Took 3 yo DD swimming today and there are three other boys and girls in her class the same age.

After the class they were all given CHEWING GUM by their mums...not any old gum, but Hubba Bubba

AIBU in thinking WTAF??!!

Is this normal? I would never dream of giving DD gum, but perhaps I'm living some kind of closeted existence.

One mum also sprayed her son's underarms with Lynx antiperspirant

Deodorant is v weird. I think bubble gum is too but dd whose two got given it by a mum at baby group recently.

Some people plainly want to choke their child. She's a bit weird anyway so didn't altogether amaze me I just figured one more bizarre idea.....

I don't really give much to DD that i wouldn't eat myself and i HATE chewing gum. It's got no nutritional value, upsets your stomach (saliva stimulates stomach acid but you're not putting food in be digested) and makes a bloody mess on the pavement. So no YABUIMO.

And antiperspirant on a 3 yo? wtf? Why not just give em a fag to chuff on and have done (feeling a bit ranty today)

Was it soaked in diesel or something?

For all you know these children have a terrible medical condition where by if their jaws are not kept supple with ample chewing then they seize up and the child may die.

yabu, is this a joke thread & I missed the joke? I don't get it, what's the problem? Why is 30 okay but not 3? And where are the xylitol proponents to say how great that is?

I hate chewing gum & ban DC from having it because it's bovine, but I wouldn't care if someone else's random 3yo had it.

Antiperspirant on a 3yo is weird, though, I'm with you there.

They were all given chewing gum by their mothers. Must have been a job lot!

I don't let ds3 (6) have chewing gum, but then I'm a bit precious. I do let ds's 1&2 have it but they are 15&17.

I wouldn't give ds3 lynx spray but his brothers use these things and it would worry me less than gum.

Disclaimer, I still cut his cherry tomatoes in half.

3 is not OK most notably from the choking hazard pov I would have thought?

NOT making it up - the three mums know each other well and this is something they all do every week it seems.

why is chewing gum more of a choke risk than say, toffees or licorice or peanut butter?

No more choking risk than any other food .

I personally wouldnt but know others that wierdly do. We were given chewing gum as kids but turned out ok * examines crooked discoloured teeth in mirror *

My dd nearly 9 hasn't even had it yet! I'm not holding off but she hasn't asked and I dont buy it anyway.

Choking aside, 3 seems a little young.

Yanbu at all dd is 8 and still doesn't get it.

She mentions others in her class get it but i just remind her that whilst they might be allowed to chew rubber sugar that's their business but i prefer her not to.

Sugar free does not get mentioned...

Toffees and liquorice are also a choking risk I should think. Peanut butter isn't though.

And as for using Lynx - foul stuff, Davidoff Cool Water would have been far more appropriate.

I come from Finland where xylitol chewing gum is actually recommended even for children (over 3) after meals (for tooth health). I give the occasional piece to my 3 year old and he spits it out in to a tissue after a while. No problem at all.
