AIBU?

To feel actual physical hatred for a car?

Dh has a car. I hate it, he loves it.

It eats money like no car I've ever seen before.

Over £200 tax
£70-80 to fill the petrol tank.
Repairs over the last year have cost in excess of £2k (probably much more). And that's with dh doing the repairs himself so no labour costs!!!
The damn thing would get £75 from webuyanycar.com. Even the insurance company value it at around £200.

Don't get me started on insurance of over £1k per year (dh is under 25 but has been driving for a few years and we have done everything to bring the premium down... we're almost under £1k... yaay! Hmm).

But it's his baby. He has nursed the damn thing almost back to full health yet there are always new problems.

Thing is we can no longer afford this level of investment in a piece of scrap metal.

Yet every small car I mention gets poo-hooed. The engine is too small, it's a girls car, it's a and everyone knows they have this, that and the other wrong with them.

Do I have permission to murder either him or the car? Or possibly both?

How I wish I could drive! Then it would be my decision!

What's a girl's car?

Hmm think you have more problems than just the car!

TrinityRhino · 09/01/2013 19:21

what car is it?

and is he always a bit of a knob?

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 09/01/2013 19:26

Can't afford lessons. Sad Maybe if we get a cheaper car though...

A "girls car" is apparently anything small. Or anything I like. Or generally anything that isn't his car. Don't worry, he has already been lectured about the "girls car" comment.

Latest complaints abouts suggested cars include; the speedo is in the centre of the dash, the pram won't fit in the boot (ds is no longer using a pram) and the reviews said it was a "bumpy ride".

His excuses are becoming feebler... I think I'm breaking him!!!

It's a rover 75. Every other he suggests is either a rover or an MG. He loves it so much that he actually wants to join the little rover/MG club there is for people like him.

In the meantime I have named the car Errol, as it's as useless as it's HP namesake.

Don't hate the car. Tell him you consider it to be his hobby, and you look forward to deciding what hobby to spend your £2k+ on this year Smile

TrinityRhino · 09/01/2013 19:27

lol aww bless his cottons, its not even a nice car and he luffs it Grin

SpicyPear · 09/01/2013 19:33

Oooh no! What a hunk of junk. YANBU. Bless him.

CaptChaos · 09/01/2013 19:35

Dear god! I thought it was at least a classic. The Rover 75 was a hunk of shit when it came out, and it's not going to get any better with age!

YANBU

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 09/01/2013 19:36

Exactly Trinity Grin. I really don't see the attraction of it at all.

Ugh, it must be jawaching to see money being paid out overvthe odds on the blahdy car then which could be better spent on getting you lessons.

I feel your pain.

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 09/01/2013 19:37

How many years do I have to wait before it becomes a classic? Grin Or are Rover 75s too shit to ever gain that status?

Hmmm, this car needs to be killed, doesn't it.

bureni · 09/01/2013 19:42

I sympathise, the Rover 75 is a total pile of junk that destroys its engine every 10 k miles. The engine studs stretch making the head gasket blow usually @ 20 k miles and every 10k thereafter since the replacement parts were never upgraded. Best get rid of it as it will continue to cost a fortune to run and repair, you could probably buy a low mileage Rover 75 for around 500 quid such is their bad reputation.

That's what I call them Adverse. I'm struggling to process the fact that someone under 25 has one. They were cars for the proud older man on a budget.

I thought it might have had the basic decency to be a good car, what's he thinking! Was it his first ever car by any chance?

Could you draw up a budget to show how much money is being frittered on it? Show him how much per month you's be better off by? Or perhaps show him what you could have bought for the same price? I'm currently paying a fucking lot for driving lessons and when I've passed we're putting the money towards snowboarding lessons. My boyfriend is v. excited about that!

Adverse whenever I see a jag I make a point of saying "Oh look it's your car..." then really disappointedly "wait... no it's not."

Unfortunately he's taught ds to recognise other Rovers/MGs and say "That's daddy's car!" so of course, ds also says it about jags too.

The Rover 75 should be preserved just to show people how not to build a car, If I remember correctly the fuel filter in the fuel tank was not replaceable which meant the whole fuel tank had to be replaced just to change a filter., I also seem to remember the company was bought for 1.00 pound in the end.

Softlysoftly · 09/01/2013 19:56

My DH's first car (some boy racer Peugeot heap of crap) sat in the garage for years awaiting fitting to be roadworthy. One day I had it towed by the scrap merchants.

I'd suggest you do the same but only if you are very very sure he won't kill you Grin.

In reality could you set him a top limit per year he can spend on it as a hobby and buy a car to actually drive, surely it won't cost as much if it's mainly not run?

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 09/01/2013 19:56

It was his second car, but it was dead when he bought it and he brought it back to life single handedly with the aid of a Haynes manual and the internet. Then it died again... and again... and again . So he's very proud of his work (and his massive collection of tools and bits and bobs that he has amassed).

He's not working at the moment, he's studying engineering and being a SAHD so our budget is dramatically reduced. He knows we can't afford it and it will end up sorned on the drive if he doesn't get rid soon but I think he's in shock or denial. However he is actually looking at cars now and not moaning as much so I think he's backing down.
