and ask if they are coming round?

Saw neighbours last week and arranged for them to come over tonight for drinks and food. They said they'd be here between 6-7 and they haven't turned up.

I have done really nice food and got in some cava. i am sitting here in a dress and have done my make up and i feel like such a loser.

Greensleeves Sun 30-Dec-12 23:27:18

May I just say RESPECT to you for not just crumbling and cancelling your YE plans! I probably would have done, I would have been scarlet and cringing, furious with myself after they had left, impotently raging at them (again, after they had left) and it would have taken me weeks to get over it!

How awful for you. Thank God it was their fault grin

Itsafreefuckingcuntry Sun 30-Dec-12 23:27:37

They are arseholes.

LOL This is so funny. I can imagine them rushing their tea down and being frog marched over you the OP's house to find her in her finery with a big spread on and them thinking she's lost her marbles.
They will turn up again NYE and expect even better grin

Maryz Sun 30-Dec-12 23:29:27

Oh dear. What are you doing tomorrow? Because if you are having a party you will have two extra guests, and if you are going out you had better tell them.

MrsMaggot Sun 30-Dec-12 23:29:43

Blimey if that's what's on offer Im moving to your street and angling for an invite, its pound shop specials round here Hehe

the neighbours sound so daft Im starting to wonder if i don't already live in your street!

trapclap Sun 30-Dec-12 23:32:07

no! they are not arseholes free just a bit spacey maybe grin
I bet they are feeling like idiots when they get home, and what has happened dawns on them!!

roastednut Sun 30-Dec-12 23:33:00

I would've done exactly as Greensleeves says, absolutely fecking furious, once they'd gone grin

Spuddybean Sun 30-Dec-12 23:43:02

It was touch and go Greensleeves. I found my mind racing and thinking of ways i could break into their house and change their clocks so we could have a full party at 3pm and then go out to our actual nye party!

Itsafreefuckingcuntry Mon 31-Dec-12 00:04:31

So you never told them they got their days mixed up?!?!

Spuddybean Mon 31-Dec-12 00:09:57

yes, i said we invited you for sunday and today is sunday, i joked and said don't turn up tomorrow, because we wont be here - unless you want to look after the baby!

thank fuck they mentioned it tho. can you imagine if they turned up when we were just leaving. or worse - after we'd gone out. they'd think we were total bastards!

Itsafreefuckingcuntry Mon 31-Dec-12 08:42:35

I hope they apologised to you. They sounded really thick to be honest.

Spuddybean Mon 31-Dec-12 09:12:40

I've been musing about this all night.

No they never apologised and they never acknowledged it was a mix up by them really. They kept saying is was a shame we were cancelling NYE, despite it clearly being a figment of their imagination. They also said they knew we said Sunday but presumed we meant NYE. But then even DP going round and seeing the 'buffet' didn't make them think we had actually, really really, meant Sunday. They kept blundering on. You'd have thought the moment DP turned up at the door they'd think 'oh shit, it was Sunday they meant'. Or that you would clarify when the invitation was given.

At the end, when they left, they made out the drinks were really impromptu and we had cancelled tomo, and the buffet had been our dinner confused All very bizarre. They are Spanish so maybe they thought that was our version of tapas <clutches straws>

MsVestibule Mon 31-Dec-12 09:40:37

spuddy do you really want to be friends with people who accept that they got the wrong day, but still try and blame you for it? It would be different if they said "We're so sorry, you went to so much effort", which I think is what most people would say!

EuroShagmore Mon 31-Dec-12 10:02:35

Oh how terribly awkward!

It easy to get days mixed up at this time of year if you are not working. I have to really think about what day/date it is! But it's not excusable to keep blaming you for their mistake!

Kinora Mon 31-Dec-12 10:23:42

How embarrassing. Will definitely be watching this thread later to see what happens.

atthewelles Mon 31-Dec-12 10:24:02

They sound a bit daft. The knew you had invited you for Sunday but assumed you meant NYE and then just assumed you also decided to invite them in for a last minute buffet on Sunday as well.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE Mon 31-Dec-12 11:10:46

How very peculiar. Wish i had a buffet tea every night grin

BluelightsAndSirens Mon 31-Dec-12 14:13:33

You will be talked about now, always to be known as the weird neighbours who cancelled nye dinner all because it wasn't a Sunday.

And your weird Sunday dinner habits will be whispered about out side Waitrose.

ShipwreckedAndComatose Mon 31-Dec-12 14:23:52

grin at blue!

Spuddybean Mon 31-Dec-12 18:25:19

Ha! Blue - yes i expect we will.

I am just getting ready to go out and half expecting to open the front door to leave and have them conga-ing past me with party hats on!

I really do feel as tho i've wandered into a sitcom where everyone has got the wrong end of the stick with 'hilarious' consequences. I'm sure i've done nothing to have caused it yet i am going over every conversation to see how it could have been misconstrued.

Oh well Happy New Year everyone. smile

RubyrooUK Mon 31-Dec-12 18:34:25

Hahaha. This made me think of my own neighbours. Last night they had an impressive firework display from 11:30-12am which woke up 2 year old DS in a terror.

I saw neighbour on street today and we said hi. I said "oh we heard your fireworks last night - did you have a party?" (Just being nosy.)

She said yes, we decided to have it last night because we didn't want to miss going out for NYE dinner tonight with friends but we still wanted the countdown and fireworks.

I said in a confused way "but it wasn't really the countdown though, was it? As it's not actually till tonight."

She looked at me like I was mad. We could easily have had your mix up, Spuddy.

vintageviolets Mon 31-Dec-12 18:49:15

grin at them congering past your window sticking their fingers up & shouting "she does weird tapas on a Sunday"
