grrrr, I bought two lots of sweets at £2.25 a packet, paid £7 for myself and £6 for each DC and then asked for a glass of water (they do serve alcohol at this cinema) and was told I could buy a bottle of water. I declined and said could I not just have a glass of tap water? The woman looked awkward and said they have to charge 20p for the plastic cup to put it in!!!

I pointed out that I thought that places that sold alcohol had to offer free tap water and she said that their water is free but they have to charge for the plastic cups . It's not free is it if they're going to charge for plastic cups? They're hardly optional, unless i cup my hands for a handful of water .

So hit me with it, were they being complete grasping dickheads, or is it ok, they're only trying to make a living etc etc? If anyone knows the legal stance on it I'd also be very interested to know if they actually had any right to do this. I'm probably more pissed off than I should be, but it has really riled me!

That's mean, especially when you had actually bought other snacks. Complain. And name and shame!

Not more money than sense, but the queues were too big in Tesco, I didn't have time and wanted the kids to have a nice treat, so i bought them snacks there. If they see you take your own snacks or drinks in they confiscate them, you have to hide them.

Well....I actually thought it was hilarious! And the woman in front of me was laughing loads too, we all enjoyed it.

It's illegal to have to pay for tap water. At least that's what one of the restaurants told us.

Well, plastic cups do cost money to manufacture and transport, plus the wages and rent of the place and people who work there.. (the cleaning off the floor of the plastic cr+p that people throw around), etc.

So.

How else are people expected to be earning a living wage?

You could always bring your own plastic cup and fill it in the ladies' washbasin....

If they see you take your own snacks or drinks in they confiscate them

As far as I know, places can charge for tap water

Its how they make their money, the cost of the film goes to the film companies and the cinema's survive by selling over priced food and drink.

snacks and drinks are a sideline only- to winkle as much cash as poss out of the punters. This one sounds like it's being v cheeky. We always take snacks into ours- and a bottle of tapwater too. Noone has ever given us the either

It is how the cinema makes profits but tbh until they adjust their prices their profits aren't going to be contributed to by me. I always take my own in.

Given it's about a million pounds for a coke (dash of concentrate filled with water and ice) 20p seems a bit of a bargain tbh.

And do they have to give you free water if your not buying alcohol??

Altkinmum - I thought they had to but perhaps I'm wrong. I've just never been refused tap water before at restaurants and I've never been charged for it. I didn't see why it should be any different at a cinema. It's not like I popped in off the street and just asked for some water.

Drink water from the wash basin? Yuk.

I thought tap water was free even if a glass or cup had to be provided. I was at a pub in Cheam last Wednesday for a meal. I asked for tap water with my meal and my friends had alcohol with theirs. I was not charged for the water or the use of a glass not a plastic cup - which would have to be washed up after my using it.

I usually pop to supermarket on the way to the cinema, stock up on some nice drinks and treats fir a FRACTION of the price that they try to rip you for at the cinema
