Chicken thighs

grrrrr......I asked the butcher for chicken thighs. I have got chicken thighs but with a lot more added on like chicken rib cage (well it looks like rib cage attached).......I saw one tidy thigh and that's what I thought I was getting. I did not have to expect to have to pay for a load of rubbish atached and and I don't have the knives to be able to cut out unwanted bones........grrrr

Should I take them back.....or what? I am grumping and now wish I hadn't bothered thinking about a lovely casserole for tea. Put right off at the thought of picking bones out........more than the norm......

They'll make amazing stock.

can you post a picture?

and tbh, you should be able to break any unwanted joints off, and cut the sinews and meat with any kitchen knife - use the extras for stock

I rang the butcher......who just said that is how we sell them.....but what he initially showed me is not what he bagged up for me. I expect a bone in the thigh but not half a carcass attached! Never in my many years of going to butchers have i seen thighs that are like this.
I went to this butchers as it is closer than my preferred one as I am just getting over a really nasty bug/chest infection. The good butchers was too far for me to go today. I can't face them now as they are very bloody too.....normally I am not squeamish, but just too tired to be bothered with boning out.....which I have tried with one.
Sorry can't do the photo just now....
Macaroni cheese for tea then.

I don't know what you have, but it's thighs can't be attached to it's rib cage! That would be a very funny shaped chicken :)

that's what i think Proud

are you sure they aren't breasts, OP?

really odd, what kind of mutant chickens do they have down your way?

You should invest in some decent knives

I love wielding a sharp knife Smile

I know-I couldn't believe it was ribs either.......am laughing now......but there would have been so much waste which I resent paying for, well I resent paying for the whole lot! That will teach me for going to that particular butchers and not my lovely butchers who are always giving me things to try- a new sausage or new cheese etc. It is an outing to my normal one, by the time we have chatted and caught up with each other!

If you're making a casserole I'd be inclined to just bung the whole lot in and eat the meat off the bone when it's served.

I cute up chicken carcasses weekly with a dull, small serrated knife and my bare hands, so I'm really not buying that you "don't have the right knives." Honestly you sound like you are being a bit of a princess about it.

UnChartered · 04/10/2012 14:53

that's a bit harsh Paiviaso

OP asked the butcher for one thing, seems like she got something other than that

Unchartered, then she can take it back. But she isn't. And is moaning she can't use it. I think she can.

Funny, I thought people posted on AIBU so that people would give them honest answers.

You can cut most unwanted chicken body parts off with a pair of kitchen scissors if you cut through the right place on the joints (ligaments).

Sounds like you have been sold chicken quarters with the drumsticks removed, cook them as they are, there should be a little more meat than if you used thigh only.

YANBU and it's definitely a crap butcher. Swindler.

Report
minipie · 04/10/2012 15:47

Um, sounds like you have been given free extra chicken, which outweighs (IMO) the hassle of cutting it off. If you're using it in a casserole the meat will fall off the bone by the time it's done anyway, so no need to trim?

If you read the post, those whom have decided to call me a princess- you will read that I am recovering from being ill and wanted an easy supper and I have tried to take this rogue bone out. Simple- I can't be bothered today because i still feel S*T. I asked the butcher for something....he showed me what I was expecting and gave me something different. If I was on top form I would have cooked the whole lot up and served it......but because I feel S*T I haven't and have written it off. OK?
Oh it was butchered badly too......just put me off. We are allowed to have an off day.
You will also see I was laughing about it......after my grump.
I have killed chickens before, plucked and gutted them; I have helped skin a deer (yes killed legally-I wasn't poaching!)......am not generally squeamish. Ex nurse who has recieved amputated legs into black bags...
Why does mumsnet do this-why am I justifying myself now......I'm just having a rubbish day. Maybe I posted in the wrong section-I did ask you what you would do- fair dos....but to be called a princess will give my husband a right old laugh later. Princess, I certainly ain't!! Thank you UnChartered for sticking up for me!

I would use a pair of scissors and just cut the meat off.

I get it-you wanted something easy because you're not 100% (me too, I sympathise: D & V this weekend, lovely) but you got something unexpected and faffy which is making you feel queasy.

But you can use kitchen scissors like squeakytoy says and cut the straggly bits off.

I would freeze if possible.

It's not "extra free" chicken if you are paying by weight is it? If you are paying by weight you don't want to be paying for bits of carcass Hmm

I'm wondering what on earth they're attached to! Confused

But, I'd suggest popping them into a casserole dish with some wine/cider/stock/water, plus some onion and herbs, for an hour or so. After that, all the meat will come off the bones very easily, and you won't have to faff around with working out how best to do it.

I would be miffed too, btw. I am quite happy shooting, gutting, plucking and jointing game if need be, so not squeamish or 'princessy' - but you pay for convenience, don't you?
