AIBU?

to want to close the curtains.

DH says we shouldn't because it's not dark.

I say if the lamps are on because it would be too dark without them, then it's dark enough to close the curtains. People walk down the street and can see right into the living room.

It makes me feel really edgey and on show.

AIBU?

Damn it, I've closed them.

He's not happy.

You wouldn't sit there with your curtains open and your lamps on, would you?

YANBU (and I have a DH that sounds exactly like yours in regards to lights on and curtains open).

Frankly, I don't see that just because it's done in the red light district in Amsterdam we need to follow suit...

we have this discussion all the time. he maintains that people look and i mantain that they wont.

the thing is he thinks that people will look because HE looks at everyone else.

I dont look and if i inadvertanly do look, i try not to notice.

i'd rather not have net curtains, but he gets all twitchy every time i mention it!

yanbu, nothing worse than feeling on show in your own home - what about romans behind your curtains in a sheer fabric -'sort of compromise?

So long as your DH doesn't mind me taking me up on my right to look in any window with a light on/curtains open to see what they're up to inside/decor's like... Grin

I hate people looking in too, but don't like shutting the curtains when it's light in the evening because it makes it seem like winter again.

I'm paranoid about people looking in at me because when I was about 17 or 18, I was blow drying my hair in the hallway and it was dark outside.

My brother came through the front door and said, "Who was that?" I said, "Who was what?" and he said there was a bloke with his nose pressed up against the glass...my brother thought he'd just left the house and had forgotten something and had actually passed him on the path Shock

When I said I didn't have a clue, he grabbed the nearest thing to him (a plastic bicycle pump Lol) and chased the guy down the road...the guy then jumped on a moped and shot away with my brother screaming all the pervy names under the sun at him.

I am sitting here with my curtains open but lights off. It's getting a bit daft now though.

I have just cleaned my windows and washed my net curtains today! Grin

Mine are lovely: they are imported from France. Wink I cannot stand bare windows and people invading my privacy, or my being distracted by what is happening outside.

YANBU. No nets here because we've got a lovely view and don't want to spoil it but we have a very busy path in front of the house and big windows, it feels like being in a goldfish bowl even during daytime and yet DH never thinks to shut the curtains at night. Or open them in the morning Confused. Having said that, in this weather I'm inclined to leave them closed all day while we're out to keep the heat from building up.

Apart from being wrong, net curtains won't stop people seeing in if your lights are on will they?

We have to close our curtains in a desperate attempt to convince DS2 that it really is bedtime even though it's still light.

Lardylump - I look. I look every time. In fact, I kind of think that if you have the lights on and the curtains/blinds open then you're pretty much asking for it!

I was very sad when the clocks went forward and my evening please god go to sleep for five minutes walk with baby DD no longer coincided with that perfect time of day when all the lights are on and all the curtains were still open.

But then I am a nosy cow. And close my blinds early.

Can't bear lacy nets..but have to have something otherwise everyone has a nose as they walk past! I've got plain voile, which is much better,I think. And we shut our curtains when we have lights on.

As soon as I need a light on or I'm in pjs the curtains are closed.

DPs mother NEVER closes her downstairs curtains. My mum says this is common and does a catsbum face, I'm inclined to agree Grin

DP will leave them open and I close them, I have blinds too. His mother opens them when she comes round too cheeky mare

I have voile curtains too, DS loves hiding behind them. Of course, if it's lighter inside than outside, everyone can see right in anyway.

YANBU. I start to feel like I'm a goldfish in a bowl after a certain point in the evening.
