Not at that stage yet as DS just 5.5 months and still breastfed but am wondering what my options are if I decided to stop bf when he is one year. He is ok when I eat soy so would soy formula be ok? Have read that it's not recommended for baby boys though and rice milk not good for under 5's. Also if anyone has advice of how they supplemented calcium would be grateful. Probably will keep bf but would like to know options incase he weans himself. Many thanks

I hear something different about soy formula every time I open my laptop, so that's a tricky one. My understanding is that the issues for boys are something of an urban legend, while the longer-term issues are more likely to occur if girls obtain most of their nutrition from soy-based products. It's such a massively contentious issue, though - I was pooh-poohed by the GP when I last mentioned it.

Your option if you want to avoid soy is hypo-allergenic formula. My friend's DDs are CMPI and she didn't want to use it as it can stink out your entire house, so she EBF for as long as she could.

DS had reflux, and got on better with lactose-free milk (obv not an option for you - but just giving backstory). When he got to around 15 months, he was barely touching his bottle, so we tried him on lacto-free milk, which he absolutely refused. He now gets his calcium from other food sources - lots and lots of beans, kale, tahini, broccoli. You could also use milk substitute products that are fortified with calcium. A couple of soy yoghurts a week do not appear to present a problem.

I'd definitely steer clear of soy, not just the concerns about it's oestrogen-mimicking properties and so best avoided pre-puberty (see this article www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2004/nov/07/foodanddrink.features7 ) , but because it is a common allergen.

DD1 was CMPI. She was BF until 14 months and then had full fat goats milk which we found to be a great option and for her there were no tolerance probs. Also used goats cheese (hard cheese, sim to cheddar) and natural goats yogurt.

You can get goats milk formula. Called nanny (as in goat) something. It is sold in my local whole foods shop. Will try and ind a link to it.

The protein in goat's milk presents a problem for some CMPI babies.

Hi littleacceb I agree goat's can be a prob for some CMPI, but for many it is not a prob, so is a good one to try.

Thanks to all, fingers crossed he would be ok with goats milk. I do have nutrimagen and neocate but he won't touch either!

Aptamil pepti went down well with my dd it's the more palatable of the milks. Dd2 then went onto alpro junior plus at just after a year. Dietician also gave Kara coconut milk as an option too. Dd1 has Kara and she loves it!

If you want to get formula I think most drs prescribe til 2 so maybe the aptamil is widths shot. You do have to warm
It up though probably more so than u would normal
Milk as it tastes vile cold. But had no problem getting dd2 to take it.

I'd recommend oat milk which is calcium enriched. I find it most similar to cows milk and I cook with it too. Thy also make a cream and choc milk my DD loves. She is cmpi and soy intolerant.

I give her a multivitamin (obv you can't do this for several years) and she eats healthily.

There are lots of resources for cmpi food ideas.

I'd suggest you wean as normal using oatly (all good supermarkets) for cooking or cereal and continue to breastfeed as long as possible.

If you want to stop breastfeeding when your DS is one, then your best option is a hypoallergenic formula.

Rice milk is not suitable as a main drink because of low levels of arsenic. Soya is a common allergen, quite apart form concerns about oestrogen etc. Goats milk formula is not really a good option - the proteins are similar to cow's milk, and the Department of Health have concerns about goats milk formula in any case (a quick google gave me this link).

You can give your baby oat milk or coconut milk to drink, but babies of 1 year old still get a significant proportion of their nutrition from breastmilk or formula so, if you do decide to stop breastfeeding, a specially-made hypoallergenic formula for babies is a much better option.
