Potted history (DD) 4Y/O has am egg allergy (not anaphylactic but atopic and ingested), and a penicilin allergy (severe). Her half sister has was anaphylactic to nuts (Addenbrooks) and is allergic to fluffy things, grasses, HDM etc.

We have been avoiding eggs for 2 years but have stuck with sponge cake in moderation as she tolerates it. At the weekend she hurtled into me and got some sponge cake batter on her had. I washed her hand and waited for the hives but none appeared.

Do you think the batter was too dilute (2 eggs) or could we be turning a corner? I am not keen to have her RAST tested again as she is also allergic to atopic skin numb cream like Emler / Ametop so we cannot anaethetise her skin and she is only 4.... We found this when she had surgery and they put the cream on before the needles and she had a horrific skin reaction.

I have had to do food challenges with her before after her nuts tests came back negative and they wanted to be 100% but do not want to trawl back into the hospital setting again. However, do not advocate irresponsible testing either.

Does anyone have experience of this progression? What did you do?

TIA

My friends ds had a similar thing, but he has now outgrown it.

Why not try applying some raw egg to her skin and see what happens?

I thought that but was worried about her reaction ...

Hi Blue

Our daughter had an egg allergy from very young but slowly she started to be able to eat cooked egg within products (ie cake). She couldn't tolerate raw egg for a long time (came out in hives immediately) so we had to be careful baking etc. She too came into contact accidentally with a bit of batter and I noticed she didn't react. I tested her with raw egg and again no reaction.

Now she is totally fine with raw egg and really enjoys cracking eggs! She is still allergic to 'pure' egg, ie egg sandwiches etc (when ingested). But slowly and surely we are getting there. Hopefully this is the case with your little one :-) BTW our DD is 4 now.

Lilpickle - thank you so much for posting. My DD is 4 now, I going to go down the batter route again just to be sure I think. She used to be wheat intolerant but has had shreddies every day this week without an issue. So, maybe it's all quieting down. Here egg allergy was a '3' so nowhere near her sister's anaphylaxis (nuts) but I do want to make her hypersensitive either.

I know when she eats cake she gets the 'itchy scratchies' as she calls them, it's such a minefield. I really hope she is growing out of it now too!

Many thanks again,
bbf
