Am in hiding, but someone vey dear to me has just been told by her SW that they are going to get a wee boy in march (about 10 months old then)

Am over the moon and would like ideas on a gift for them and him,

and are there such things as adoption congratulations cards?

Thanks x

Could you not get aan ordinary "It's a Boy!" card? I know it's not adoption specific. but they are still having a new baby.

I've never seen an adoption card, but any congratulations card would do. It is very kind of you to think of getting them something - when I adopted almost nobody even sent a card, which surprised and dismayed me. I would suggest a little toy or book for him (something without mummies and daddies - a Maisy book perhaps) and for the parents either flowers/chocolates or perhaps an offer of a gift in kind - to cook them a meal, or offer some other kind of practical help in the early days when they'll be knackered.

Congrats to your friend! I adopted dd at 10 months and it's such a lovely age.

How about a copy of the book "Oh the places you'll go" by Dr. Seuss. It's a wonderful message for all kids and especialy adopted ones. And yes you do get cards, but why not make one? They will love it.
Lovely news wish them all the best from MN

lots of traditional birth cards talk about the "arrival" of your new baby which is just fine as he is still a baby. Like Hester I was very touched by those who did send a card. In the absence of am "arrivals" card a congrats card will also do. The problem with some adoptions cards is that they are very focused on the adoption when it doesn't actually happen for some time - the child has only arrived not yet adopted <<pedant alert!>>

I agree with kew. There are in fact lots of " new baby" cards with suitabel wording. Eg hey its a boy, congratulations on your son , new arrival etc

As long as you avoid the ones that say the BIRTH you will be fine. You dont need one that says adoption as that would technically be incorrect ( not that anyone would mind though)

I got a lot of beautiful cards when we adopted. Most of them were nothing to do with adoption, just regular congrats on the arrival of your baby. All were very much appreciated. One of the nicest cards I've seen was hand made. It had a picture of a baby holding two flags - one was the flag from their birth country and othe other was the flag of their new country. Obviously this only works if it's an intercountry adoption.

I adopted an 8 month old boy. I received ordinary "congratulations on your new son" type cards and the type of presents you would give anyone who has just become a parent - clothes, toys, books etc. I was delighted with any effort people made to show they recognised how happy we were and what a big life transition it was. So I don't think you need to worry - it really is the thought that counts, and you are obviously thinking of what this means to your friend which is very nice. smile
