Does Imodium work

For suspected Norovirus?
I feel awful. Its coming out of both ends. I just want it to go away. 😔

God yes. I took it when I had campylobacter (although read on here recently you shouldn't, not sure why!) after 5 days of suffering and it STOPPED everything very efficiently. Too efficiently you might say!

ZealAndArdour · 18/06/2022 01:06

You shouldn’t take it for Noro or any infective cause such as gastroenteritis, your body needs everything out for a reason. Bunging yourself up is counterproductive.

MaChienEstUnDick · 18/06/2022 01:08

As pp says, you need to ride it out and let the infection leave your body - anything like Imodium isn't really a good idea. However, if you're shattered an just want to be able to sleep 'securely' I'd take one and one only. That will get you a few hours of peace though you'll be back on it tomorrow. But honestly, best if you can ride it out.

No I took it when I had campylobacter and the pain I was in overnight (I took it at bedtime about 5 days in to try and get a decent sleep) anyway I was nearly calling an ambulance the pain was that bad. Whatever it is that's bad in your stomach, you need rid of.

DaysOfOurLives88 · 18/06/2022 01:28

You're all right. I've always had the attitude of "riding it out" but I just can't do Norovirus (who can!)
I just want it to stop. It's been going since 11. I'm hoping not long left.

Thank you all.

That is not true!

Noro wants to spread and it does it through puke and diarrhoea. It's absolutely fine to take Imodium.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/06/2022 01:41

I've only used it when I've absolutely HAD to travel while squirty. I was always told not to keep the germs in. However, it very much depends. If you are still well and can drink enough and add salt/electrolytes etc. I wouldn't. If you are losing more than you can replace and feeling terrible, maybe.

Imodium works though. It's magical.

KangFang · 18/06/2022 01:51

I got food poisoning in Thailand once.
Imodium definitely worked for me, in that instance.

HerRoyalNotness · 18/06/2022 01:55

Yes, it still
comes out but it slows it down

onlythreenow · 18/06/2022 01:56

I agree with those who say you shouldn't really take it with noro. Your body needs to get rid of the infection and is perfectly able to do so. Noro doesn't last long so just ride it out.

DaysOfOurLives88 · 18/06/2022 01:59

Thanks all.

I'm feeling completely dreadful. I'm such a baby.

It works well for me.
Buy the supermarket version loritax Exactly the same active ingredient loperamide as in imodium but less than half the price.
I get mine from Tesco.

WTF99 · 18/06/2022 02:06

I took imodium when I had the squits with chemo. Definitely gave me confidence to safely leave the house bathroom

TheLadyofShalott1 · 18/06/2022 02:44

You have my sympathy OP!

I am another one who thinks that if it is caused by an infection then no, don't take loperamide. But please do have the full daily dose of Dioralyte (or a generic brand of same) on every day that your D & V continues, as well as flat full sugar lemonade, and of course some water, but not too much plain water as it can dilute an already undernourished body.

When you start feeling hungry begin eating again slowly, with something like dry crackers or Matzos, with a little marmite (if you love it!), and/or dry toast with a little jam or marmalade on it. The most important thing is to not overload your digestive system with a lot of rich or fatty foods while it is still recovering, but if your body says yes, then some live plain bio yogurts can help get you GI tract back on track.

Once the infection has gone, a healthy adult shouldn't take more than a couple of days to get back to normal. If a young child gets ill with D & V I would always ask for medical advice, and sooner rather than later, as their little bodies can become dehydrated very quickly, which can become serious quite rapidly, so they may need to go on a saline drip or similar.

By the way, dehydration is a lot more complex than just a body lacking water. A very dehydrated person admitted to hospital, will actually have their plain water intake greatly reduced, and monitored.
I really hope you are feeling much better soon OP. 💐

DaysOfOurLives88 · 18/06/2022 22:23

Thank you everyone. I did try imodium, three tablets and it did nothing for me unfortunately.

@TheLadyofShalott1 Thanks for your advice. Once I'd stopped having the diarrhoea, I started eating small amounts of crackers and also small sips of Lucozade. I am feeling so much better. I'm still throwing up a little but it's just all liquid. Must've had about 3 litres, if not more, of water today.
I weighed myself and I've lost 6lbs. Wow.
