DH got his nan a marks voucher but with a written promise to take her to spend it and tea and cake in the cafe. He doesn't spend much time with her so I'm sure she'll love it.

Smile Don't be sad.

My Nan passed away earlier this year. I have bought her favourite Turkish Delight and will wrap it and put it under the tree to eat at Christmas.

A magazine subscription, a wool blanket from the national trust shop (she can use it to keep warm on her mobility scooter!) and a bottle of elderberry liqueur.

Posh shortbread biscuits and two massive photos of the DCs. She's going blind, is 95 and not really enjoying life much any more. Afternoon tea and the DGGCs are what keep her going. Smile

Framed photo of DCs (it's a school photo but one of the modern type ones) and probably a plate, which I'm going to get DD to draw on with sharpies - apparently you can genty bake it to set the ink!

Not a grandparent but my dad is 91 and doesn't sleep much at night any more so we've bought him adjustable comfy headphones so he can watch the telly with the volume loud whenever he likes (he's getting rather deaf). Plus chocs and other treats.

Something edible is good. In my experience, elderly folk don't tend to want 'stuff'. Go for consumables.

My Gandmothers have all passed away now but when they were still around by past 90, a nice photo of our family was always a winner, and some small treat in a nice tin /porcelain container. Boring and predictable yes, more knick-knacks to clutter the place but they both seemed to be genuinely pleased. Anything made / drawn by the kids.

A basket with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, chocs and a photo of DS for his great gran. She is 90, doesn't need anything and doesn't have any more room for framed photos! But she gets visitors every day so she'll use all the items.

photocalendar and an amazon voucher. She loves her kindle and reads huge amounts but can't really afford new books by her favorite authors so relies on the free books.

I got my Grandma a knitted snood last year which she seemed a bit perplexed by initially but Mum says wore lots (indoors, she gets v cold) in the cold weather.

Really struggling for an idea this year. She is 97 and in a residential home and doesn't have much room for pictures etc. I'm not sure whether even biscuits would get eaten Sad Any thoughts?

Money for heating oil. Pragmatic but she loves it. Then we usually get her a trinket as well. Mostly something edible- thinking of making her the white chocolate peppermint things from last week's observer.

This year, the last Gran is getting a lovely cosy bed-jacket (half length dressing gown) from Marks (now bedbound).

I got her a pot of indoor roses for her birthday in August. My Dad got her lovely l'Occitane hand cream then.

Other presents that I know have gone down well (other Gran died this summer, elder Grandad died 2 years ago - all in 90s), were:
Promises of keeping the garden (mowing lawns and keeping the 2 small beds weeded, occasional bedding plants for colour)
Potted up "indoor gardens" of plant collections in a tub

Lap blankets - "Baby rug" from a good wool company (in not too babyish colours), and I sewed a pair from 2 different lovely Irish tweed materials backed with (flowery cotton for Gran and striped Irish linen for Grandad). All 3 have been well used just over knees while sitting at home in winter, the tweed ones travelled on summer holidays (somewhat windy destination - but after more than 40 years, they weren't going to stop), and all 3 have been used as extra covers and reminders of home for periods in hospital.

Promises of time.

Homemade goodies - as they don't get "proper" homebaking much anymore and were all gone beyond doing it themselves
