Suggestions for 12 year old boy

Help - particularly from mothers of sons.

I have a soon to be 12yo nephew who I almost never see. (Not our choice - it is a complicated family situation beyond our control) I want to get him a Christmas present and would prefer not to take the easy route of money or vouchers. However, I have no idea what I might safely get a 12yo boy having no experience of DSs myself. When he was smaller it was easier as we could get toys - but at 12?

I think he likes football but have no other clues.
