Can anyone help me regarding self assessment and employment

Hi so last April I gave up my self employed job and started an employed job. Did my last tax return and filled out the ‘stop self employment’ form.
However I had a text to say don’t forget to file your tax return by end of jan. I’m panicking. I’ve logged into my hmrc account and can’t find anything on there about my old self employed job, only my current job. Should I contact them?

I will call them but I’m pretty sure I’m not registered anymore as there is no evidence of my old buisnsss on my account. Thanks

I've never had a text from them either. Endless emails yes, but they only ever text when you're trying to log into your online account and they send an authorisation code.

Call them ASAP - loads of self-employed people leave their tax returns to January so it's a very busy time for HMRC. It could also be that if you gave up your self-employment later in April, there may be a couple of weeks where you were still in self-employment during that tax year and still need to complete a form, even if you earned nothing.

When you do you self assessment you are given a confirmation receipt and if you log on it tells you the date your assessment was lodged.

Perhaps you have saved the receipt on your computer and just forgotten? Try searching for saveYourReturn.

Yes - phone HMRC and make sure that they know that you are no longer self employed and ask them to withdraw the notice to file.

I suspect the text may be a scam - I’ve never had a text from HMRC.
