Hi Ladies, I am looking to start up my own business and my head is spinning thinking about all the things I need to cover. Can anyone help me as the more I read the more I get confused.

I am only looking to start up a small business which ll be run from the spare bedroom of my house. I have checked with my mortgage company and they are happy to allow me to run my business, I will notify my house insurance company as I know it may push up my premium. No customers will be coming to my house, my business is online only. However I have read about small business rates - a charge. But I have read this is for shops, cafes, units in and doesn't apply to me? Does anyone know if that is right?

My business includes me selling products online, do I need any licences or permits to do this?

Who do I need to register my business with?

Can I do my own accounts and is it easy to do - I have a standard education regarding math

Does anyone have "list" of things to cover when setting up a business?

Thanks in advance Huns!

Here's a link to business rates for home businesses - you fit the criteria to NOT have to register for business rates. So do I :)

Good luck with your business!

If your room is solely for business use then you may need to register for business rates. Speak to your local council.
You need to register with HMRC as soon as you do anything business related ie buy stock.
Read the Consumer Contract Regulations. You must be compliant with these. It includes things like displaying your trading address and contact details as well as your obligations on returns/cancellations. You do not need any further permits but stock and product liability insurance is advisable. If there is any chance someone will visit your property you need public liability insurance too.
You can do your own accounts using a simple spreadsheet. Tax returns are easy.
