Here’s the details...

Sat, 11 May 2019
12:30 – 14:45 BST
Location

Central London
London

Description
The very worst of Lesbian erasure is upon us as our society embraces the mutilation of young lesbian bodies with chemicals and surgeries. How did we get here and how can we stop it?
Our panel is chaired by
Anne Ruzlyo, an Ex prison officer

Our panellists are:
Sheila Jeffreys: a lesbian feminist writer and activist. She taught sexual politics at the University of Melbourne, where she is now a professorial fellow, before retiring to the UK in 2015. She is the author of 10 books, and her latest is The Lesbian Revolution: lesbian feminism in the UK 1970-1990, 2018.
Julia Long: a lesbian - one of the old-fashioned kinds that doesn’t have a penis. She has worked in education, local government, academia and the women’s sector, and is currently a researcher in the field of male violence against women. Julia is a long-time Lesbian Feminist activist and her book Anti-Porn: The Resurgence of Anti-Pornography Feminism was published in 2012 by Zed Books. She is currently writing a book on how men have managed to convince so many people – including most ‘gender critical feminists’ - that there is such a thing as ‘transgenderism’. Julia has the great good fortune to live in Lesbian Feminist community and wants all women to know that this is possible. Her hobbies include sitting on chairs, eating pizza and naming men as men.
Dovile Lapinskaite: graduate in politics, philosophy and history of art, lesbian radical feminist, activist and independent artists.
Julia Beck: a writer and organizer from Baltimore, Maryland. She helps produce a monthly radio broadcast for Women's Liberation Radio News. Last year, she represented lesbians at Baltimore Pride and on the Law and Policy Committee of Baltimore City's LGBTQ Commission. She is currently at the fore of the fight for women's rights in the USA.
There will be a bounty of merchandise to purchase, please bring cash.
We will be live streaming on Posie Parker Youtube channel.
The venue supply unlimited water and will be announced a few hours before the event.
If you are experiencing financial difficulties please contact [email protected] and we may be able to offer a reduced ticket price.

Thank you for this OP. I remember some of the world Sheila Jeffries described. All great speakers. I liked what Julia Long said: what we resist, assists. She is always so singular, interesting and positive. Smile

I am utterly convinced that we need to rebuild women’s culture (and lesbian nation) and I feel fired up to do it. Who’s with me?!

Me. No idea how to do this but also fired up to give it a bloody good go.

I had to dash and really felt I missed out on the pub chat afterwards so if anyone is Surrey based (Guildford) and wants to start a group/meet for a drink or a rant in person please DM me.

I’m finally home after this glorious weekend of loving women, plotting with women, weaving stories and webs of connection.
I feel replete.

I watched part of this on YT yesterday and will watch the rest today. Glad it was a successful event, really inspiring to see it come together. The talking points were brilliant and insightful.

not spending our time on threads about particular individuals of the bepenised variety, but instead turning our focus on to women where it should be

This^^. I'm not claiming virtue here.

I started watching the event on YouTube late last night and ended up watching it all in one go. Just amazing, thanks to the organisers and everyone involved. So many important points and interesting arguments about the counterproductiveness of the commonly adopted language around 'gender ideology'.
A woman in the audience talked about being made to feel like scum as a rape survivor who needs women-only services. In case the woman is reading this, I just want you to know that it was a story like yours that truly opened my eyes to the harm being done to women. I ask people why they prioritise the feelings and desires of men over women who need, want and have the right to access women-only services, spaces and activities. There is no good answer. I'll keep on asking.

I really think the most feminist place here is Relationships

Smashing the patriarchy one shitty marriage at a time

Brilliant! That's so true I almost want it on a t-shirt 😂

I’m watching this on YouTube right now, sad I couldn’t make the actual meeting but glad I started this thread! I follow Posie on FB, so heard about it there. Am going to A Women’s Place meeting next week, which has some great speakers, we will def have a thread about it, and hopefully it will be live streamed too!

Julia Beck's advice about training physically and learning a martial art struck a chord with me too.

She spoke brilliantly about not wasting our energy on the men who like to leech it from us, and instead of just resisting, turn our energies into creating a women's movement that makes a difference. I loved that because it's very much what I talk about here in the sense of not spending our time on threads about particular individuals of the bepenised variety, but instead turning our focus on to women where it should be.

I've watched it all now and that was my favourite bit.

We should stop caring about what the latest stupid thing a bepenised one has said and certainly stop wasting our typing time on it here.

Structural issues and positive things for women: they're the two things to spend time and energy on.

I had a train booked home, but I was so high as we left I decided to fly Grin awesome day, Sheila Jeffries was excellent, Julia Beck was clarion clear, so articulate and full of excellent, practical suggestions. And I got to meet Julia Long which would have been on my bucket list if I had one.

She spoke brilliantly about not wasting our energy on the men who like to leech it from us, and instead of just resisting, turn our energies into creating a women's movement that makes a difference. I'm so happy to have met more brilliant feminist women and made more connections, and I'm sorry if I didn't get to speak to you as a fellow MNer - there were so many women there it just wasn't possible to stand up and say 'Hi, FloralBunting here!'

You might have heard me speaking via a microphone though Wink
