Anyone gone sugar free to lose weight?

sugarfreehopefully · 21/05/2020 22:10

It's my nemesis so I need to ditch it. I did it before and lost 8kgs but it's all gone out the window in lockdown. It's so hard not to eat crap when there is bugger all else to do. Really I should just not buy it as it's too tempting.

Anyone going sugar feee?

I thought I'd better come back with an update. I only managed 20 of the 30 days Sad.

But I lost ten pounds, which have not gone back on (yet Grin) despite eating as normal for the past two weeks.

Not very scientific, and not sustainable. I would not recommend it, but I might do it for a couple of weeks if I ever had an event or holiday coming up (not that I have a busy calendar Smile).

I'm on day 4 now... last night was hard I was really really craving sugar!
When would people say it gets easier?!

Wow it sounds like people are doing really well!
I'm not eating sugar or sweetener and I'm trying to eat as healthily as I can and stay away from flour based foods.
I think unfortunately cooking from scratch is the best way to go I quite often use pinch of nom or 2 chubby cubs for recipes. They're aimed more at people doing slimming world it they're basically pretty healthy recipes you can always adapt them to suit.

So I've done over a week without any biscuits, crisps or shop bought bread!

Am now getting down to meal planning (I have 3 LOs) and am at a loss. Where do people go for recipes, or sugar free inspiration for family meals?

I quit sugar with a Sugar Stop Challenge hypnosis app and I'm down 10 pounds in nearly a month. 10 more pounds to go get to my goal weight.
I lost my baby weight with a hypnosis app, but gained it back and that app didn't seem to work anymore when I tried agin. But this one seems to! I can look at cake or a biscuit and have zero desire to eat it. I'm eating fruit though. And I woke up during the hypnosis once and I swear there was something about a sugar covered squirrel... WTF? Seems to work on me though.

I'm 2 weeks in now and weighed myself this morning ... I've lost half a stone :) :) I'm so happy! It really hasn't been hard, I've only been tempted a couple of times but have made myself get up and walk around the lounge until the thought passed :)

I'm doing no sugar or sweeteners, the only fruit I have is blueberries with my porridge. I do have carbs though, so lots of carbs and fats have meant I haven't been hungry at all so far.

Hi can I join you? I've been trying to lose weight for what feels like forever and the only thing that trips me up over and over again is sugar... I eat well apart from that but can easily eat 5 or 6 bars of chocolate or a pack of biscuits I'm totally addicted I'm like an ant always looking for it so I've decided to quit starting today.
I'm a bit nervous actually Blush

Morning everyone, it's a bit quiet here, how is everyone doing?

I'm almost half way through Whole30. I admit, it is tough to forego all sugar, snacks and processed crap, but I tell myself it's only for a month. And I'm hoping that at the end of the thirty days I'll be more inclined to carry on with some of the changes and will reintroduce some dairy and a few more carbs.

I have noticed though that I'm less wobbly around my middle. The weighing scales and tape measure are out of bounds until the end. Smile

Great stuff @ndo4000, you can do it!

The more you can resist in the early days, the easier it will become, I'm sure. I'm stubbornly ignoring temptation, but the first few days were tough. Smile

@ndo4000, it's not really willpower, just stubbornness Grin and the fact that it's only 30 days. I could not go beyond that. In fact, I'm thinking of doing NoS in July. No sugar, no seconds, no snacking, but you have three proper meals every day. I'm hoping that will stop me piling weight back on, as you are allowed a small 'treat' on 'special' days such as birthdays, holidays and at the weekend.

@SundayName it sounds like you are doing amazingly well! I'm not sure I can follow anything that restrictive.... you must have amazing will power!!

Hello to the newbies!

I think people on here are doing various plans. I'm doing Whole30, and am on Day 8. All processed food is off limits for 30 days, as well as dairy, most carbs and alcohol.

I'm starting to get used to it now. Fruit and nuts for breakfast, black tea, black coffee and water to drink only. Meat, eggs or fish with plenty of salads and veg at other mealtimes.

Can't weigh yourself until the end. Promised myself I would stick to it completely, no cheating.

I don't know much anything about this but what counts as sugar. Can you still eat bread / ketchup etc? Is it just talking about cakes, biscuits and puddings?
Is there sugar in booze? So no booze?

Can I join in the discussion?!

I am looking to go sugar free from Wednesday. Lockdown has not been kind to my wobbly tummy. I'm going to keep eating fruit though.

Bit concerned about how I will make it work with family life.....

Any hints and tips for recipes?

@lemmathelemmin, I'm still eating fruit on Whole30. It would be far too restrictive otherwise. Time will tell whether it works. Smile

Are you cutting all sugar out, including sugar from fruit?

I've struggled with sugar addiction in the past, and the most helpful piece of advice I received was from a doctor who told me that when I start craving sugar, to just eat some fruit. It worked with me and I've cut back a lot.

I went sugar free recently but I haven't missed out, my new hobby is low sugar baking. I've made beetroot brownies and chocolate kidney bean cake recently, sounds yuk but tastes delish! In the fast 800 recipe book but theres loads of sugar free baking ideas on the web.

I'm not an all or nothing person, but I did find reducing sugar was a good foundation, basically

  • I reduced to no more than one thing a day which included processed sugar (which cut cravings)
  • I switched to mainly plant based wholefoods but still ate plenty of quantity at first (this seemed to help my body and appetite be less food dependant)
  • then I reduced overall amounts to roughly 1400-1600 a day, more before a big run.

I do still eat the odd bit of junk but way lower quantities, food tastes better, I'm pleasantly hungry before the next meal but not starving, and am slowly losing (13kg over 6 months).

Day 3 of Whole30 here, a quick update.

Breakfast is fruit and black tea
Black coffee mid-morning
Salad for lunch
Proper dinner, but strictly within the guidelines
Water, when I can remember.

I've been having various berries, grapes, bananas, avocado, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, carrot, cucumber, boiled new potatoes (they are allowed), salmon, lots of BBQ meats yesterday and a homemade curry tonight.

But absolutely no dairy, bread, rice, pasta, sugar in all forms, crisps, sweets, pudding, cake, pies or other processed crap.

It's not too difficult so far, not allowed to weigh myself until it's done, so on day 31.

I'd like to post once a week with my weekly highs and lows. So far, a few hunger pangs, but otherwise good.
