C25K and 3 stone to lose

ACurlyWurly · 25/06/2019 09:04

On Sunday I walked the Race for Life.....walked it and was knackered! All those 'I am going to get fit' failed starts and I struggled to walk for an hour.

This has got to stop!!! I want to run the Race for Life next year....

I weigh 13s 6lb and after 6 months in jeggings have realised all my jeans no longer fit. My big jeans!

The change starts now.
I have joined a gym and am going to do my C25k journey there on the treadmill so I cant make excuses about the heat, rain or cold.
Last night I downloaded the Couch to 5k app and did my first 'run' bloody hell no one prepared me for that...it was bloody hard, I am embarrassed by how hard it was.

So run 1 complete + 5 mins on rowing machine, 2000 calories in crisps fed to the birds to get them out of the house.

Next run on Wednesday...does anyone want to come with me.

CurlesandCurves is right - make sure you've got the right shoes. I tore the ligaments in my foot last year because I was running in ancient shoes.

Not too bad, actually. I've got my final run tomorrow or Monday.

I hate running - I'm just rubbish at it. I do loads of other exercise but running eludes me. I did Cto5k once about 10 years ago so I know I can do it but I always get stuck at the end of week 4!!

@rustynail well done, how are you finding week 3, to be honst i am a bit scared of that one!

@curlsandcurves wow week 9!!! I looked ahead at that and shouldnt have. well done.

Week 2 run 3 complete today and I am feeling good that i finished it but daunted by moving on. I will give it my best and if I need to repeat anything I will.

I have some great trainers with lots of support, my OH is a runner who has done marathons so was very strict about getting good shoes. No more weight loss this week but I am less focused on that than getting moving right now.

Just wanted to say well done, you can do this! I started c25k a while back and I had 4.5 stone to lose and had never run in my life. Just about to head out to do week 9 run 2, so it can be done!

My best advice would be to take it at your own pace. If you need to repeat a week, do it. If you still don’t feel ready, repeat it again. It’s not a race.

And my other tip is get to a proper athletics/running shop and get advice and fitted for some decent trainers. This made a massive difference to me, being as big as I am I think your feet need the proper support.

You can do it!

week 2 run 2

still feels very unnatural and hard, I am just blogging my journey to see how far I go here now but happy for anyone to tag along the c25k journey, next run is on Friday.

I am still making healthier food choices but not being super strict will focus on diet after the holiday. have promised to take gym kit with me as there is a gym at hotel, lets see if i use it.

Sounds like you have a great mindset ACurlyWurly. Take your time and be kind to yourself. If you have to repeat a week, or have a small set back, that’s really not a problem. The important thing is that you made a start in turning things around!

Good luck with it all. And if you’re ever looking for more support, there’s usually a lose half a stone in June/July/August thread around on these boards. Feel free to join us!

Thank you all for your support. I really didn't expect anyone to respond.

Crazzzy I will have a look at the cross trainer on my next visit. I think I may need to repeat week 1 of c25k to give myself a chance. I tried the rowing machine today and although I only did 5 minutes I really enjoyed it and no pain!

At 13st 6 I am 2st 4 above my healthy weight range and 2lb above overweight on the old NHS BMI calculator. so this week, making healthier choices, take it easy and not beat myself up, aim to lose a few pounds in the coming fortnight.

I have a holiday in a couple of weeks and know I will make some bad choices but when i come back I am hoping to throw myself into it.

Planning to do some yoga this week to stretch everything out as I used to love that and I can do that easily on holiday too.

Week 4 seems a long way off Frazzles well done on your progress....and Oddest I really hope I find myself where you are in coming months / years.

You can totally do it! I started c25k at the end of last year (I'd done it once before a few years back), and now I run several times a week. I'm loving it, I can run for 40 minutes or so at a time, and it's done wonders for my mental health, as well as helping me lose some weight

Well done you!

Fantastic start and you sound really positive and determined, but as Crazzzycat said, try to take it slowly.

I've just re-started C25K. Although my start weight is a bit lighter, I'm 49 and generally unfit so it's tough going, but it does get easier, honestly. I'm doing the first run of week 4 on Thursday and trying not to think beyond that.

Good luck with run 3. You can do it!

Well done you for deciding to make a change!

Can I make a suggestion though? As you have a year to do this, start very very slowly. Running is so hard on your joints and if you’re 3 stone overweight the risk of injuries Is unfortunately significant.

Could you use one of the cross trainers at your gym? It gives you a similar exercise, so will help to build the muscles and fitness you need for running, without too much strain.
It’s a safer way to get started I think than going straight into running.

For what it’s worth, I was three stone overweight at the start of this year and lost it all through diet and exercise (mainly calorie counting).

You can totally do something similar if you put your mind to it. Good luck!

Run 2 a not as agonising as run one but real bad pain in my ankle. Body is not impressed with new get up at 5am and work out routine.
Next run on Friday morning! I can do this
