How to lose weight post menopause?

Especially if you have a life - like the odd glass of wine and -horror - carbs!

I've always been relatively slim and could always cut down a bit and exercise to lose any excess lbs after holidays and Christmas.

But, my God is it hard now! I can lose a bit by extreme low carbing, but as soon as I switch back to even thinking about, say 60g of dark chocolate and sharing a bottle of wine with dh, it seems to go straight back on - most visibly around my middle.

I'm super-active, if a bit creaky.

If anyone has done it and maintained, please tell me how!

Weights are worth a try. And I have started tracking via mfp plus my Fitbit, which tells me my calorie maintenance limit is 1680 per day.
Absolutely - I agree, giving up the occasional glass of wine etc is too much!

It's a bugger isn't it. Upping your muscle mass is a good idea though, as we lose this with age. Are you adverse to a bit of weight lifting?

I can't imagine giving up dairy (not bothered about wine) and I don't see why you can't incorporate a bit of dairy into your regime? Or even a glass or two of wine?

I can't follow "diets" that dictate what can and can't be eaten; I'd much prefer flexibility plus accountability. I use fitbit and MFP for mindful eating and calorie counting. It works for me.

I read that your metabolism does in fact decrease as you age due to decreasing muscle mass. (Saga website).

I'm glad I read that, because I'm convinced I find losing weight harder than ever, and keep being told I'm not disciplined enough.

I hope you've found something that works. Smile.

Thanks. It's probably a case of finding out what works for my metabolism- and upping the exercise even more. So dispiriting. I'm currently giving 5:2 a try, and aim to go to the gym or trying Jillian Michael's 30 day shred 4-5 x a week.

My back is a bit dodgy, so I'll need to take care with that though.

I definitely think metabolism slows down every decade.

I hate the thought of giving up dairy and wine, and consume little of either, but they do affect my weight - instantly it seems.

Sorry, meant to add that DH has been trying to lose weight by exercising (cycling, running and gym) but eating normally - I'm beating him by miles!

I've lost 2 stone so far at weight watchers mainly using their no count option. You can have wholemeal pasta, wraps and brown rice and lean meat and fish etc as long as you eat till you're full, not stuffed. There are even some points put aside for a bottle and a half of wine a week if you wish! The only no-nos are butter and cheese.

I feel your pain! It DOES get harder.

Do you keep a food diary? If not, try MFP or similar and start logging calories and exercise. If you're super active, good for you.

I'm post-meno (I think) and I'm finding it more and more difficult. I've always carried weight on my legs and now I'm carrying it on my stomach for the first time ever. It's soul-destroying. I CAN lose though, at a very slow rate. (about s pound a month).

For me, it's just a matter of focus, and coming to terms with things I can eat in very small quantities, or not at all. And in my case, upping exercise, as I'm a lazy mare.

I'd love to know if metabolism slows down in middle age, and if there's evidence to support this.

There's some good stuff on low-carbing over on Gransnet, too.

The wine is a killer post menopause. If I can stay off the wine I'm fine. When i start drinking again it all goes on my middle.

Try regular exercises.
