Tablet with parental control/timer

My DS has been hassling us for a tablet because "everyone else has one".
I'm not mad about them, as I don't want him to turn into a "tablet potato" and would rather he spent more time running around.
However, I do take his point and remember being singled out as a child because I didn't have what everyone had. Plus of course, tablets are tools that kids these days use at school and it's not like a bit of screen time turns you into a sloth.
A friend of mine told me about the tablet he got his son, a huddle, which sounded perfect to me because it's: not too expensive, and more importantly because it has some sort of timer the parent is in control of. So the tablet turns itself off when time is up and the child cannot sneak off and use it when you're not around (which DS is likely to do). We have already enough things that are potential sources of arguments, I don't want the tablet to be one, I don't want a "please mummy, can I use it because I've been good, brushed my teeth, wiped my bum, etc). "
Just looked around, and discovered that the bloody huddle is no longer being made!!!
So what else would you recommend?

We have a kindle fire for DD and you can control that with a passcode and limit time, you can also set it so certain things are available (remove specific content and increase others)
Was relatively cheap and is lasting well at a year old it still looks new.
Only downside is the limited memory and the wifi dependency.

There are apps or similar that allow you to limit how they use the tablet. Setting morning /evening cut offs. Maximum usage per day. Online security. Etc.
Try screen time, although there are lots.

Bump...I'm also interested to hear recommendations.
