The Supermarket Sausage Mystery (That My Oxbridge-Bound Kid Solved in Seconds)

HelloandThankU · 16/05/2026 01:09

The other day in the supermarket, I spotted something bizarre: a 12-pack and an 8-pack of the exact same sausages, both priced identical. Naturally, you’d grab the 12-pack, right? Everyone else was doing just that. I kept wondering why on earth they’d cost the same, and felt a bit sorry for the 8-packs just sitting there going to waste.

But when I got home and mentioned it, my youngest—who is currently being encouraged to apply for Oxford and Cambridge next year—solved my sausage mystery in a matter of seconds. Am I just being a bit thick?

You can not apply for Oxford and Cambridge in the same UCAS cycle.

They have an agreement in place your child needs to choose one or the other.

Also, aside from them being different types of sausage (regular sausages v chipolatas), maybe the 12-pack is cheaper because the sell-by date is earlier than the 8-pack?

Now let’s not confuse things by making things up. This is not a thing ( My husband used to be the meat products buyer for Sainsbury’s 😆. The sneaked in packet of chipolatas with the fetching reduced label is likely to be just before its sell by date. Guaranteed to confuse the op further

Mystery solved! They were actually completely different types. Because the font and colours were identical, I didn't look closely enough.
The pork sausages were 454g, but the pork chipolatas were only 340g. I do wonder if the other shoppers made the exact same mistake as me—everyone was grabbing the chipolatas thinking they were getting a mega bargain! One woman even nabbed three packets of them. Meanwhile, I bought one packet of chipolatas myself, completely missing the fact that the standard pork sausages were actually the heavier weight!

Not RTFT but are you actually being serious that you think this is a difficult issue to spot and that your "Oxbridge-bound" kid is somehow especially clever for seeing what the rest of us saw immediately? 😂

If you look at the two chipolata packets with a visible sell-by date (apart from the yellow-stickered packet), those dates are clearly earlier than the dates on the 12-pack of sausages……

Lifeomars · 16/05/2026 13:52

Weight I assume, I always compare price per , kilogram, you have to look closely at the price labels when shopping as what can look like a bargain sometimes isn't. I am a thicko who did not go to uni but I understand how to shop sensibly. Another thing I look at is ingredients, how much water content, how many additives, the proportion of fat, is the fat saturated? . Maybe I should apply to study science!

oh dear me, never mind, one born every day in retail marketing cons

m00rfarm · 16/05/2026 13:58

I prefer chipolatas.

WimbyAce · 16/05/2026 13:59

Is this a wind up? There are always more chipolatas than thick sausages in a pack?

Feis123 · 16/05/2026 14:01

My dog can tell the difference, strange that he is not encouraged to apply to Oxbridge.

Blatant discrimination against the doggie cohort. I blame Meghan Markle

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 16/05/2026 14:08

I think the questions in the Oxford/Cambridge entry exams might be a tiny bit more difficult that this....

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 16/05/2026 14:09

I often see huge crowds in the reconstituted meat aisle excitedly grabbing sausages.

Given that you asked, yes you are being a bit think.

They are different products. One is 8 normal (fat) sausages and the other is 12 chipolata (thin) sausages. If the pack weight is the same the price makes perfect sense.

it doesn’t need the humble brag about the oxbridge bound son being smart enough to spot the difference.

mismomary · 16/05/2026 14:59

Just read the label? Very simple.

Scottsy200 · 16/05/2026 15:24

This is a joke right, not exactly Oxbridge worthy is it 🤦🏽‍♀️

Grammarnut · 16/05/2026 15:31

MajorLanceYouDontWantMeNoMoreNsoul · 16/05/2026 01:14

Is it a weight difference?
I can't see the weights from the photo

One pack are chipolatas the others are sausages. The chipolatas are thinner and will cook differently.

A bit dim of you. You read the price per 100g (probably one said per kilo the other per 100g to be obscure but the sum is easy since we only use base 10 now - one reason arithmetic is not as good among the young as in my day!). You also check the respective weights. It does not take an Oxbridge candidate to work that out (I went to Keele and Leicester). To the person whose DD went to DMU, that uni is very well rated.

Vote for classics! 🙋🏼‍♀️

Is this a vote for what the OP's DS should read at Oxbridge?

GenialHarrietGrouty · 16/05/2026 15:53

I don't think you need to be Oxbridge material to work this one out. The average clued-up 10 year old could do it.

60andcounting · 16/05/2026 15:59

It isn't a mystery.
