The Supermarket Sausage Mystery (That My Oxbridge-Bound Kid Solved in Seconds)

HelloandThankU · 16/05/2026 01:09

The other day in the supermarket, I spotted something bizarre: a 12-pack and an 8-pack of the exact same sausages, both priced identical. Naturally, you’d grab the 12-pack, right? Everyone else was doing just that. I kept wondering why on earth they’d cost the same, and felt a bit sorry for the 8-packs just sitting there going to waste.

But when I got home and mentioned it, my youngest—who is currently being encouraged to apply for Oxford and Cambridge next year—solved my sausage mystery in a matter of seconds. Am I just being a bit thick?

This has to be a joke post 🙄

I love that you think you needed an oxbridge candidate to figure this out 😂

“Oxbridge bound” and “being encouraged to apply to Oxbridge” are not the same thing at all either.

A sausage baron 😂😂 I love sausages, so might look at a career change to become a sausage baron!!

I am going to be a sausage roll baron

EmmaB1309 · 16/05/2026 12:43

Happens all the time. Today in Tesco I was wondering why an eight pack of diet irn bru cans is £3.50 but a 24 pack is £7.50.
But that’s not what this is-one is chipolatas and the other is sausages.

Yes, you are being thick.

..Unlike that bottom pack of sausages!

In Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Abe Froman is the Sausage King of Chicago.

You could easily be one of Abe’s barons.

I would love that!! Also need to re-watch FB’s Day Off - haven’t seen it in years!

Shall we team up?

SnappyQuoter · 16/05/2026 12:49

Why would you use chaptgpt to write this?

And yes, you are being a bit thick. Food is by weight, always check the price per cost. My 12 year old knows to do that.

Also, maybe read packaging. They’re totally different products. Check the weights. Really not hard. Hilarious that you think your son is a genius for doing what every woman does when shopping. Apart from obviously. Poor lamb.

Also, aside from them being different types of sausage (regular sausages v chipolatas), maybe the 12-pack is cheaper because the sell-by date is earlier than the 8-pack?

Because the 24 pack is currently on offer so it is much cheaper. Even when not on offer, it is still cheaper per unit to buy the bigger pack because that’s how bigger packs work. Usually cheaper per unit.

As an adult, I felt differently about Ferris, i must say.

Coz ‘Oxbridge’ innit.

Monty36 · 16/05/2026 12:57

A missed opportunity to have a post about the best supermarket sausage and why !

Totalmayhem · 16/05/2026 13:01

Yeah…. You don’t even need a gcse to figure that one out🙈. Sorry op - you’re definition of bright is not where everyone else’s is!

Totalmayhem · 16/05/2026 13:02

Arghh - spell check typo🤦🏼‍♀️

SerendipityCat · 16/05/2026 13:07

What a bizarre post, a "big nothingburger" as my youngest grandchild puts it. I also solved the mystery in seconds, which I suppose speaks well for Leeds Polytechnic.

Miniaturemom · 16/05/2026 13:08

Showed it to my 7 year old, she figured it out and she’s average at school 🤷‍♀️

Don’t say that, she’s clearly Oxbridge-bound ⭐️

GuelderRoses · 16/05/2026 10:16

I solved it in a millisecond and I've only ever been shopping in Oxford and Cambridge. 😂

😆😆😆

TheBloomingDahlia · 16/05/2026 13:17

I prefer a chipolata personally! Perhaps something to do with the bigger surface area.

Anyway, not meaning to be rude, but are you due for an eye test OP? Sausages and chipolatas are very different looking words, even with the same font and colours

Sahara123 · 16/05/2026 13:17

Has anyone spotted the decoy pack of chipolatas at the amazing reduced price of £1.34 ( I think. I can’t be bothered to go back and check).
That’s guaranteed to confuse the op and the sausage buying Oxbridge contingency!

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 16/05/2026 13:18

Yeah you don't need to be at an oxbridge uni to know that chipolatas are smaller than sausages....

ChampagneLassie · 16/05/2026 13:21

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 16/05/2026 02:03

I’d expect anyone who has learned to read English could have worked out this “mystery”.

Did you just want to brag that your child is applying for Oxbridge?

It was a very convoluted way to make the humble-brag wasn’t it 🤣

Andepeda · 16/05/2026 13:21

Richmond pork sausages in packs of 12 are often cheaper than packs of 8 when on special offer. Sausages can be tricky.
