The Supermarket Sausage Mystery (That My Oxbridge-Bound Kid Solved in Seconds)

HelloandThankU · 16/05/2026 01:09

The other day in the supermarket, I spotted something bizarre: a 12-pack and an 8-pack of the exact same sausages, both priced identical. Naturally, you’d grab the 12-pack, right? Everyone else was doing just that. I kept wondering why on earth they’d cost the same, and felt a bit sorry for the 8-packs just sitting there going to waste.

But when I got home and mentioned it, my youngest—who is currently being encouraged to apply for Oxford and Cambridge next year—solved my sausage mystery in a matter of seconds. Am I just being a bit thick?

To be fair, the post says Oxbridge bound. We all know that Oxbridge isn’t a place and that you don’t apply to anywhere called Oxbridge. Thus we know that the child isn’t literally Oxbridge bound.

There’s what’s written but there’s also drawing meaning from what’s written. The infant is not even applying until next year. If a parent says they’ve been told their child is Oxbridge material we know perfectly well what that means. Only the most tediously small minded would correct the proud parent and say “Oh but you can’t.. etc. etc.”

Ir means the children knows their sausages from their chipolatas.

Does he know his onions though?

Mystery solved! They were actually completely different types. Because the font and colours were identical, I didn't look closely enough.
The pork sausages were 454g, but the pork chipolatas were only 340g. I do wonder if the other shoppers made the exact same mistake as me—everyone was grabbing the chipolatas thinking they were getting a mega bargain! One woman even nabbed three packets of them. Meanwhile, I bought one packet of chipolatas myself, completely missing the fact that the standard pork sausages were actually the heavier weight!

Or……they prefer the chipolatas! I know I do

StormGazing · 16/05/2026 11:52

Chipolta are much smaller, likely the same weight

TheIceBear · 16/05/2026 11:53

“Is currently being encouraged to apply for Oxford and Cambridge next year “ lol . Surely this is a piss take

You're not being a bit thick, you're being a lot thick.

For your young person's sake I hope they are actually smart because Oxbridge entry is way more involved than knowing that a cipolata is about half the size of a normal sausage.

Looks like Father Doughal left the priest hood and had a kid - definately smacks of 'This one is small, that one is far away'.

Comment of the year 🤣🤣🤣

It really depends what kind of shopper you are. I always check price per kg/unit.

Could be the sausage college🧑‍🎓

Jeffrey Archer used to talk about 'being at Oxford' until it was found he'd been to Oxford Poly, or whatever, I think it's Anglia Ruskin now!

He did have a gift for inaccurate precis.

I doubt she was thinking they were better value than the full sized sausages, she just probably had kids who liked chipolatas. They cook faster too.

Or she was doing pigs in blankets early and freezing them for 25/12.

Waitingfordoggo · 16/05/2026 12:15

I only went to an ex-poly but even I managed to solve this puzzle.

Kattitude121 · 16/05/2026 12:15

Not exactly the same though, one pack are chipolatas and the others ordinary sausages 🤷🏻‍♀️ same weight, different size sausages.

shockthemonkey · 16/05/2026 12:17

Anglia Ruskin is in Cambridge. It offers a very poor education. I can’t believe Jeffrey Archer went there - it’s for kids who would be better off doing an apprenticeship.

The second university in Oxford is Oxford Brookes. Has slightly higher entry requirements than Anglia Ruskin and some of its degree programmes are decent to good. Maybe that’s where he went?

😂😂

Love your name! I'm in the middle of reading it, prompted by this year being 100 years since Richard Burton was born, which staggered me until I realised how old I am!
We do have similar problems in the curriculum, Product A, packed in 8 cost £X, Product B packed in 10 costs £Y which is the best value, not necessarily sausages but I may have to include them in the 2028 exam questions!

katepilar · 16/05/2026 12:22

Looks like you didnt look into why they are diffent price. If thats the case YABU.

sunflowersintheday · 16/05/2026 12:23

Jeffrey Archer did go to Oxford, he didn't do a degree, though, he did a diploma in education to train as a PE teacher.

katepilar · 16/05/2026 12:25

Do they not tell you price /kg on the shelf label?

katepilar · 16/05/2026 12:26

Its not a mystery at all. Lets say you are having a very bad day.

Archer's Wikipedia makes excellent reading, just had a look, his father clearly set his son up for life! His 'Oxford' career is an interesting read.

Sorry to mention Anglia Ruskin, stupid error, I've been stuck in traffic outside it often enough when I went to Cambridge. I only went to Cambridge on the Park and Ride though which seems to go a different way now.

Pibrea · 16/05/2026 12:30

If you were the father I would suggest a DNA test

CoyGoldenKoi · 16/05/2026 12:31

This is a really common supermarket ploy.

For example, the "budget" ranges of many things are actually more expensive, per unit weight, than the standard range. They just have similar looking packages which are actually different (smaller) weights, so people looking for a bargain and who can't do the maths to work it out, are disadvantaging themselves.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 16/05/2026 12:31

McSpoot · 16/05/2026 01:22

Yes, you are being thick.

This 100%. Along with all the other shoppers who were too dim to work it out.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 16/05/2026 12:32

Are you thick, maybe? Or maybe you need to get yourself to specsavers?

If you are not an AI bot, then what you are is a marketer's dream client. Stick a big offer sign on a product and watch the customers pick it. Put it at eye level or on a gondola end to increase the success of your campaign.

I'll not comment on your 'Oxbridge' bound prodigy as my super-telented DC, complete with their PHD from a top 10 uni would have been able to spot this whilst still at primary!
