Vandalised toilets

Have any of you worked at any secondary schools that have combated the problem of vandalised toilets? I don't mean graffiti alone, but smeared walls, all sorts of items flushed and drains blocked, used pads stuck to stall walls, urine everywhere.... I could go on.

I'm not SLT, just a desperate teacher in a Lord of the Flies style school (that's what it feels like, anyway).

Thanks

Sara

When is it happening?

Although tbh it sounds symptomatic of a much wider issue. The ethos and behaviour need cracking, then the toilets won’t be an issue...

This happened in our block repeatedly. We got the caretakers to lock them eventually. I'm sure once SLT realise we will have to unlock them but it's gone unnoticed so far.

Happening again this week. Desperate for suggestions. If is not happening in your schools, what are you doing right?

Thanks.

I really don't know why we don't have cameras there already. It's a fairly new school too and it gets wrecked on a regular basis. Discipline is poor and SLT are perceived as weak.

That said, I can see that a whole school effort is needed to try and crack down on these rogue groups of children. We seem to take pupils that are kicked out of other schools in the county and behaviour isn't great by any means.

Re toilets. I don't know why we cannot have cameras (stalls are floor to ceiling) and check on them every hour. If they are ruined, then cameras could pinpoint who in that hour could be responsible. It'll only take a few incidents surely, to pinpoint the culprit?

The dreaded unisex toilets. The single self contained toilets the open directly on the corridor. I. E. No loitering space by the sinks

Toilets changed to single wall to ceiling cubicles containing washbasins, with CCTV outside.

Surely it’s down to the the culture of the school and the expectations of students regarding how they treat their environment? What’s behaviour like in general?
