Rant about Vinted

ChilliPB · 23/09/2022 07:40

Just a proper rant really!

I try and buy a lot of my stuff second hand an usually get stuff on eBay and have never had a problem, but Vinted just has been a nightmare.

Sellers don’t respond to messages, or take ages to do so. I was interested in an item and asked a question, three weeks later the seller replies.

Bought a different item from a different seller, who now a week later hasn’t dispatched or replied to my messages so if it’s not sent shortly I’ll have to cancel and try and get a refund 😫They are meant to send in 7 days. EBay often sellers send within a day or two.

Have I been unlucky? Should I give up? Any tips for avoiding crap sellers?

I have bought and sold over 100 items.
Recently I received a skirt listed as a size 10 but feels like it would struggle to fit at age 10! The seller blamed the brand rather than acknowledging if they've worn the item it was very clearly smaller than marked like some brands are always generous and some clearly need measurements listing. I'll know next time!
I've had one item that was clearly damaged due to the security tag being forcibly removed leaving a hole. Brand new with tags for less than £5 should have been a giveaway,
I've had one item returned as the buyer changed her mind and then complained that it was damaged/marked, it wasn't but I had no choice but to accept a return paid for by the buyer.
I also has someone complain that I hadnt sent everything after ordering a bundle at 50% of the price listed. She asked for a further discount but then confirmed receipt after I declined as I didn't have the item she said she hadn't received so who knows where that ended up as it was definitely sent out with everything else!
Overall, its still better than ebay! I just relist if necessary and charity shop for anything that clearly won't sell.

I’ve sold a lot on vinted, when someone sends me a message or buys I get an email alert so go onto the site to respond within a few hours. If someone buys from me and I haven’t posted in 2 days vinted send me a reminder.

I think because there isn’t a listing end date people forget what they put up for sale if it’s been a while. On the listing it will show how long it’s been on the site.

hopefully you find better sellers

I've not had any problems with Vinted until this week. I stupidly didn't check one sellers feedback and this person basically lists stuff but never sends it. What's the point? Had listed loads but never sent a single thing. I got a refund but who has time to photograph and list things for no reason? Absolutely baffling.

This week I've messaged two sellers about a lipstick they're selling. I am looking for a particular colour that has been discontinued. Both had posted the brand and a picture of the lipstick case but no colour. So I've asked both. Both have seen. Both have ignored. How hard can it be? Does anybody just buy a lipstick just from seeing the case? So odd. Their loss I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

My biggest peeve with Vinted is how casually some sellers take a week to post stuff, or sometimes accept an offer and STILL don't post. I get the money back, but why list if you're not planning to send.
The best one was when I asked the seller to check with the courier if the item was lost (they often ask for the seller to get in touch) and she said- sorry hun, you picked the courier, it's out of my hands now, sadly she didn't realise money won't be released if I don't confirm I received the item...

this is my experience so may not be the same as others. I’ve been selling 3 years. And last year I’d say people have made it hard. Low ballers, people always trying it on for free items claiming smells or creases what not. It feels like it’s not safe to sell items half the time and worry someone will lie to try get it free. Then you got people who don’t click received and most people know on a Friday how bad that is as you won’t get anything over the weekend. They only pay out mon-fri. So motivation slips. I bought stuff over January and I found hardly anyone honours the 40% bundles and get annoyed at you like you done something wrong for asking for a bundle. So wastes your time looking when you probably won’t get a response or some people make the price higher and expect you to buy lol. No one is hardly leaving feedback. So in day my average daily amount is sales. 5 out of that won’t leave feedback or click received. 3 or 4 will pull the classic smell to get it free. And maybe 4 or 5 will be classic Vinted buyers and leave feedback and click received. So maybe like me they are like I cba. I got 1200 items to bin later as I’ve had enough. It’s sucks to be a buyer and seller and it’s because of the people. Vinted itself is a platform that works. People don’t work together

In a day average 12 sales

I've just checked on my Vinted account and you pay £1 for 'insurance' if the item does not arrive or is not as described. So your issue is getting them to post it, not that you can lose if it doesn't turn up. Vinted sellers don't tend to see this so much as a business I think which is why they are less prompt about posting although it has to be done in 5 days or the whole thing automatically cancels. I don't think that's unreasonable.

I use Vinted a lot and have only had an issue with one buyer who had no reviews that I took a punt on. Lots of negative feedback came up at once and she went on a mad rant under one of them about how Vinted was a scam and she wasn’t posting anything until she had her money.

I now always read reviews carefully and have a look at what else they are selling to see if it’s a similar sort of vibe. DS has a lovely wardrobe now of Joules/Boden/Monsoon etc all bought for 1/10th of the price and better for the environment. I also buy from the same sellers I know are good. I like that you know the fees you are paying upfront when buying and selling too.

As others have said there has been an influx of scammers recently, all with no reviews and only high priced items listed. There is also the blurred photos and people asking for only £1 off RRP for well used clothes but you get that on eBay too.

Hmm interesting so many mixed experiences!
The seller has actually now posted the item so that’s positive… will see whether it turns up/what it’s like 😂

Also my teens use it to buy and sell and they love haggling and making loads of offers, they wouldn't use it to purchase one high price item. They think it's fun, and in fairness most purchases have come on time and they send promptly.

It is a lot cheaper than eBay, so you are usually taking a chance with a few quid. I would not trust higher end brand things are genuine. Mid price high street are v cheap and the site reflects that I think.

I think you have just been unlucky. I've bought lots on Vinted , only BNWT. I have only had one issue with a seller. No issues with buyers at all. It's SO much better than eBay!

I use it a lot. Only had one item that wasnt sent and the refund came quickly. As a buyer tbh I hate the constant offers and questions. I’ve got about 50 items on at the moment and I don’t bother replying. Just takes too much time.I also think that the people who ask questions are the ones who are going to be more demanding. Would you ask a retailer questions honestly?

Definitely wait for them to automatically cancel.

I didn't realise this would happen and so I cancelled after 6 days after not hearing a sausage from the seller (the first time it had happened after buying quite a lot of stuff). Then I got a message from Vinted saying if I cancelled the order again I would get negative feedback! I get that it's to stop people just buying and cancelling all the time, but I was a bit annoyed that it wasn't made clearer.

Apart from that I've had quite positive experiences on Vinted, although I have only ever bought, and have got some real bargains. One of my bugbears is having to sift through utterly shite photos of items! Why wouldn't you make sure you had uploaded a decent photo?

I've had so many offers for things I tend to put things on at a couple of quid more than I'd sell them for so I can accept an offer. You can always refuse it.

I think youve just been unlucky. On the flip side I find a lot of buyers CF. I put a brand new baby winter suit on for £5, RRP £20. Someone messaged to see if I'd take £3.50.

Ive been on Vinted for a while and really happy with them. I've only had an issue once: when am item wasn't posted within 7 days so I got an automatic refund. I'm not looking for high end or rare stuff tho - mainly dressy stuff for my toddlers to save me having to pay high street prices for things they'll only wear a handful of times. I've also sold quite a bit and never had any bother.

I hear you, op.
I'm a newcomer to Vinted and I've 'bought' 6 things.
2 items were never posted so purchase was cancelled, never heard from sellers.
2 items arrived promptly.
Another was was lost and I was refunded and 1 is currently lost somewhere in the ether and I'm waiting to be able to claim a refund.
Maybe I've been unlucky too but it's not been an excellent experience so far.

The reviews are really unreliable. Loads of sellers give bad reviews in revenge if you don't give 5*and they can be edited after.

Vinted seems to give off a younger vibe to me. I think there's probably a lot of sellers who've never done eBay so don't know the way we think it should be done!
I still use it loads though, for buying and selling. When I'm selling I always put lots of photos, lots of details, measurements, materials etc in the hope it might catch on Grin
I've not had any problems with selling but had my fair share of orders getting auto cancelled, and unanswered questions and offers not getting responded to. It's frustrating but it's cheap!

Vinted the app works fine for me as both a seller and a buyer. Payments are quick, I've turned off the postage methods I won't use. Its easy to list which unfortunately means you get loads of lazy sellers with blurry pictures, no descriptions or inaccurate descriptions of the item. Sellers take too long to post or send a glass gar candle in a plastic bag and wonder why I'm asking for a refund because it arrived smashed. Hmm

I can't be bothered to ask more questions like what material it is made of or actual measurements, they don't deserve my money to make a sale if they can't list properly. There are just as many good sellers than poor ones and I always read the reviews.

I sell a lot on vinted. I only have Evri or inpost as an option. No issues. I don’t take offers for anything (and now actually put that on my listing).
if it hasn’t sold within 3 months it goes to the charity shop.
mine isuue I did have though 7 months ago, was not getting notified when I had a sale. It’s since been sorted - there was an email issue, rather than me having notifications turned off. But, there were two people who’d bought something I never sent.
