Deodorant suggestions for my 9yo DD

DD is only (just) 9 but I think she already needs deodorant… she washes underarms (or I do it for her!!) every evening in the bath (with plenty of soap) but there’s a distinct whiff of sweat by either the next morning or certainly by the next lunchtime. Her clothes get a little bit smelly under the arms which I want to avoid.

Of course I guess she could shower in the morning as well as bath every night but I think it might just be time to try a deodorant? It just seems very early at 9 Sad No other signs of puberty whatsoever, she is still very much a little girl. She is however quite sweaty in general, her hands and soles of her feet are so incredibly sweaty (and have always been) thst I’ve Googled in the past and think she may have hyperhidrosis in some form.

What gentle child-appropriate but effective deodorant could I try?

I think she will be a bit embarrassed about the need for it so something unobtrusive would help and/or something from a shop she likes or that seems appealing!

If she's sweaty then surely a morning wash would be a good idea?
Also if she is sweaty then a Deodorant probably isn’t going to cut it, she might be better served by an antiperspirant.

Maybe start with a morning wash and a gentle or natural Deodorant like Bionsen, or Scrubbingtons but be prepared to go to a standard antiperspirant.

Pitrok is the only natural deodorant/ anti perspirant I’ve ever used, it genuinely works (and no I do not sell it!!). I think it’s just pure salt crystals which makes it sound useless and a bit hippyish (no offence to the lovely hippies). About £8 a go I think but lasts absolutely ages

Also slightly faffy as have to put on wet skin but once you’re in the habit straight after a wash it’s fine, and doesn’t take ages to dry (especially if you move about a bit!)

Sorry- I meant the only one that’s ever worked on me(not ever used!)

We use nuud on our sweaty 9yr old dd - only a teensy bit and it seems to work

Thanks everyone!
My parents swear by pitrok, Builderscrack, but I found it useless on my own rather sweaty pits! I may try it on DD as a first step though as I think she might enjoy the crystal aspect!
I think you’re right that a quick morning armpit wash might be an interim step SpottedZebra, will just have to find time in the mad morning rush Grin and see if that staves off the need for deodorant (or you’re right, anti perspirant) a little longer.

Is this highly unusual do you think or am I being over sensitive and in fact is it relatively normal for a 9 yo?! Other girls in her class already need little bras etc but she’s not at that stage at all. It’s only the pits!

The gentle or natural types don’t ever seem to work. Roll on can take a while to dry and might feel a bit sticky. I would either go for a spray like sure or mitchum or one of the stick type anti perspirant, the sure or dove maximum protection ones are very effective for me. If she needs it then go for it properly they aren’t going to harm her.

"Salt of the earth" do crystal type deodorants & have spray & roll on variations. DD has the roll on lavender & likes it. DH & I both use the solid stick.

My DD is 8 and went through a phase of having obvious body odour last summer. I was really shocked! It seems to have settled again. Perhaps due to winter perhaps it was hormonal? I had to use what i had to hand and it did the trick. But she did get sore armpits one day so I will stock up on something milder for next summer.

My eldest is almost 12 and still doesn't smell!

I'd go for the Dove stick deodorant.

Not for any particular reason, other than I've used it, it works, and it feels pretty gentle.

Had same issue with DD2 at similar, probably earlier age. We started with this one

crystalspring.co.uk/collections/deodorant-for-kids

You need to get it wet though but it is good.

Later one I got her a normal ladies one as it was easier; but after that it seems to have settle and she doesn't seem to need it now, maybe in summer.

I think it is hormonal. I also think it is the milk and the cows have too much stuff injected on them. DD1 never had that problem but she has not drunk milk since she was 4. That is my theory but I am not an expert.

Dove roll on (Blue) is good and I think pretty mild, I tried the other 'scents' but didn't get on with them. It lasts & it's gentle.

I wouldn't go for a spray for a child. I personally don't like the sticks or rocks.

I don't think it's unusual for a child if her age, but I don't think most kids do, however, she might just be taking after you. I wouldn't go to the Drs about it, unless there's anything else that's concerning you.

I highly recommend this one. I use it and my 11 year old dd is now using it. It lasts 3 days and is aluminium free. It comes in a little pot so you have to use a finger to put it on but it works and it’s hard to find one aluminium free that actually works

It’s not cheap but the little pot lasts ages.

Perhaps try Aromaco from lush. It comes in a bar, and is very gentle

It's normal, as girls hormones kick in they can get really stinky but it levels out in time. Scrubbingtons Pitstop is designed for pre teens it has less harsh chemicals in but seems to stop the stink.
DD also uses mitchums which is very good although takes a while to dry properly but that uses quite harsh chemicals.

If she's not showering in the morning she needs to wear antiperspirant to bed or shower / flannel pit wash with soap on the morning. Not washing them in the morning and not using anything either isn't going to help.

Oh and for stink shirts you want dettol anti-bac that goes in the softener section of the washing machine drawer. Until I started using that I'd get a sweaty smell everytime I ironed the clean shirts, now they don't smell of anything.

Salt of the Earth vanilla and lavender spray is what I use. It smells lovely and causes my fussy pits zero irritation. I'm not super active but it seems to keep me stink free all day.
