Go to a outdoor shop, they normal have some good base layers if your going anywere with snow and doing out door activities then yes worth it.

Are you skiing or doing a specific sport? Or just for day to day wear? If the latter then Uniqlo or M&S are fine to layer over.

I made a trip to Primark and found the most amazing lined leggings/tights. One has fake furry stuff on the inside and the other is thinner. Find them in tights section. I also purchased their knee-high wool socks which are fab. Wore them under jeans in NY and they kept me warm.

I got some nice extra warm thermals from M&S.
Don't leave it too long now, as thermal stuff will be gone once the Spring clothes are in, or at least there won't be as much choice.

Merino tops and leggings. Icebreaker are great but expensive. Other cheaper options are available.

M&s do a great range. My kids and I wear their vests day to day.

sweaty Betty does great base layers too if you want something aesthetically pleasing. I wear these skiing.

Otherwise try any mountaineering outdoor type shop and look for silk or merino wool layers. Awesome!
