Gel top coat over normal nail polish? Anyone tried?

I have maybe 5/6 colours of gel nail polish at home but never quite turns out right always sticky or lumpy. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but suddenly came up with an epiphany to put a clear Gel top coat over a normal nail polish colour?

Has anyone every tried it. I want to be able to keep a nail colour without it chipping within 24 hours?

Otherwise are there any normal polish top coat brands that seem to do the job?

15mins?!

An hour spent with your hands under direct UV light is quite dangerous. Please stop doing this. 90 seconds max per layer.

Your lamp is definitely not working if it’s taking that long for gel polish to dry

15 minutes!! That's way too long, is your lamp working? It should only take a minute or two

15 mins?!

What lamp are you using? What gel are you using?

It shouldn’t take 15 mins to cure each coat - I’ve got the sensationail kit from Boots which I use with blue sky gels and it’s a 90 second curing time.

Sounds like somethings wrong with the lamp/gel combo if it’s taking 15 mins per coat.

Brilliant thanks everyone!! Looks like I'm not the first to have this idea and will deffo give it a go!!

I have the sally Hansen nail hardener but usually put it under the nail polish? Will deffo try that on top too!!

I try to keep my gel nails under the lamp for about 15 mins per layer but they still seem to get ruined. After an hour of sitting with my hands under the lamp I end up having to do something (usually baby related) and they get ruined. It's exhausting!!

I put gel top coat on normal polish and it works fine, I don't even wait for it to dry first. Results are good and it always looks far glossier than normal top coat

If it is sticky are you allowing it to cure long enough under the lamp and if you are, are you using a finishing wipe to remove the final sticky layer? Lumpiness - Too thick layers meaning underneath isn't curing?

You can apply gel topcoat but as pp said you must ensure that the normal nail polish is 100% dry.

I use gel polish and put sally hansen nail hardener over the top coat, it seems to make the polish last for ages.

I think as long as you allow the normal polish to air dry 100% before you put the gel coat on then it should be fine.
This is the reason I don’t do it though, I don’t have the patience for drying normal polish, I always end up smudging it before it dries, so I use gel for that reason.
