Cost of a private EP assessment?

Hi. We are looking at getting our 8 year old daughter assessed by an educational psychologist. We've been told there's a long waiting list for the council educational psychologist to come in and that the report may only be very short. She has problems with reading and understanding what she reads and we think that there may be some memory problems there. I spoke with a private educational psychologist and she quoted me a price for a 'cognitive and learning assessment' which she would do at school or home. She quoted £500. Does this sound about right? Seems a lot, but hopefully we will get some useful information to help our daughter.

Thanks :)

I was told approx £600 (by a SENCO at a private school who must have seen 100s of them in her career).

However, i just spoke to a SENCO in a state school and she advised me that privately purchased educational psychologists reports are not accepted by her school because "private reports will say whatever the purchaser wants them to say".

I am not sure that I agree with that opinion but it would be worth checking that your report will be accepted by whoever you want to use it before you spend good money on it.

Have just had two done, £600 for one, £500 @ for two. No buy one get one free's on offer. Was the best thing I ever did. Far more comprehensive report than any LEA gives. Well worth the money. They are bound by professional codes of conduct, if they have the right credentials, I see no reason as to not trust them. My view has always been that an Independent EP assessment will tell you the truth and make needs led rather than means led recommendations. Our LEA EP has failed both my DS's. She failed to assess DS1 and missed valuable info. and she missed a 4th percentile processing difficulty and reduced writing speed ie. SPLD's x2 in DS2, despite being glaringly obvious and me asking for it. All about corner cutting in my opinion. It's all about who pays the mortgage.

If you get a moonlighting or recently retired LEA ed psych, it's a bit harder for the report to be made light of.

Mine was £800 but she did come for 2 days and had to stay overnight in a hotel. Would say it was the best money I ever spent. It became clear that the LA EP had basically just tested my sons areas of strengths and ignored all the weak areas. The report made me cry in frustration as everyone knew how much he was struggling but the LA kept bleating that the LA EP had not found any extra needs. It that was because he didn't go looking.

My EP was an ofsted inspector with 40 years experience. She ripped the LA EP to shreds in the tribunal although e LA EP had to admit that he hadn't seen my son for a year.

Independent EP reports are so detailed and thorough that although expensive it was worth every single penny. We won our tribunal and my son will now be going to an independent ASD school yet just under a year the LA EP was saying he was absolutely fine
