Slimming World For A Fussy Eater?

Hi,

Sorry if there's been a thread on this, but I'm new to Mumsnet! I'm thinking about starting Slimming World as I'm unhappy with my weight and I'm only 21 so I don't want it to get any worse, I'd rather tackle it now if that makes sense?!

I go to the gym regularly, about 3-4 times a week and walk every day. I try to drink plenty of water but I'm trying hard to drink more as this has started to slip recently. My main issue though is my relationship with food - hence my opting to join Slimming World.

I'm an incredibly fussy eater. I've been told to 'grow up' about it multiple times but I can't help it, I've tried so many ways to open my palet but none have prevailed. Therefore, I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions for Slimming World for fussy eaters. Can it still be done? I like veg and quite a lot of meats, so I think I'd be able to do some meals. However, a lot of my food is quite bland so I worry I'll get bored of the meals and crave unhealthy food.

Some of the foods I don't like (and don't think I'd ever change opinion on) include:

  • Cheese
  • Eggs (though I want to keep trying these and hopefully like them)
  • Milk
  • Anything with a creamy texture
  • Spicy foods
  • Spinach & Rocket

My main issues lie with the texture of foods which is why I don't think I can break the fussiness. I have a real problem with creamy foods, so I don't have flavoured foods often.

Any help would be appreciated. It would be great to hear from anybody who's been through Slimming World as a fussy eater?

Thank you so much :)

You choose your own diet with slimming world so I'm sure you'll be able to work round things.

I lost 15lbs in 4 months (only stuck to it half the time but the weeks I did I always lost weight).

For me the godsends were grapes (whenever I had a sweet tooth) and cucumber (just, with everything xD as a filler upper), as long as you can eat those in abundance you'll be fine.

Ironically SW is probably one of the easiest of the mainstream plans to follow (IMHO) as you're encouraged to cook from scratch .... so absolutely no excuse for not liking the sauce or the type of veggies served ..... all your choice. Also, you can have the Same meal every night if you had a real restriction of what you like. I've got a baked potato cooking in the oven just now, with some cheese & salad for dinner ...... very plain but it's what I like.

I followed SW for a while, and cut out bread almost completely..... never had sandwiches for lunch or toast etc, would have occasionally if I was out ..... had Weetabix (usually muffins) for that.

Do you like cereal? You could not have bread at all, but have Shreddies, weetabix or honey puffs for your hexb. There are others but those are the only ones I can remember as I don't like cereal.

You sound less fussy than some in my slimming world Facebook groups who avoid all fruit and veg. You can do it!

Sorry that should have said 14 weeks! Not 4, I still have around 2st to go but happy with how it is going. Good luck! Used recommend staying to group too if you can, don't just weigh and go, you get so much encouragement and recipe ideas.

Planning ahead is key really and everything else falls into place. Eating out can be tricky, I tend to check the menu ahead and make my decision on what to order beforehand so I don't make a bad choice.

@Invisimamma thank you so much, and it's so interesting to hear your meal plans. I would eat all of those dinners! They might even be my first weeks worth of foods :). Would love to hear any more recommendations you have?

Thanks so much and congrats on your weight loss - thanks an amazing result. I only want to lose about a stone but just want to pick up a better relationship with food. I'm a size 12-14 but I'm very short and all the women on my side of the family have been naturally bigger so I'm fighting against genetics but detirmined to shift a little weight :)

I really like the plan as I don't feel deprived and nothing I completely out of bounds. Ihave two fussy small boys and they mostly eat the same as me, although they might have a full fat version or with bread, without spice etc

Pasta and rice doesn't need to be wholemeal, just 1/3 of your meals need to 'speed food' that's sw speak for vegetables or fruit.

I have lost 22lb in 4 weeks.

Just for example this week we're having for evening meals:
Fajita chicken and sweet potato wedges (kids have their chicken plain with wraps)
Gammon, SW hash browns and brocolli
Tomato pasta (with leftover gammon)
Beef strirfry with noodles
Salmon and new potatoes and asparagus
Sausages (low fat) and mash

@Invisimamma, thank you very very much! I think bread and bagels will be tough for me too as I am fussy about brown bread. My mum does Slimming World though and recommends 'thins' which I believe are either free or only 1/2 syns.

I like potatoes and pasta and rice, so this is good news. Though I am assuming the latter two need to be wholemeal?

Cooking from scratch is a bit of an issue for me as

  1. I struggle for time
  2. I'm rubbish at cooking

But I'm all for learning and hoping I can get into meal prepping too.

Thanks so much again.

Most meals can be made 'slimming world friendly'. The plan relies on cooking a lot fresh and from scratch and not relying on convenience items.

Pasta, rice, potatoes are free so if you like those you should be fine. Lean meat is also free so chicken, ham, low fat beef.

Plain fat free yoghurt is free but flavoured versions have syns, I usually have fruit and plain Greek yoghurt for breakfast.

White bread, wraps, bagels, cereal etc are not good slimming world options and this has been the biggest change for me. Lunches I will now have a salad or jacket potato or eggs.

@LosingLola, thanks very much! I do try to have 2 small yoghurts every day to try and get my calcium in as I know I'll seriously lack it otherwise. Do you think that would count?

I'm also going to try some smoothies. Almond milk is a good suggestion, thank you very much.

I'm feeling optimistic about it, just a little worried as I know most of what I eat now would be a lot of syns!

With Slimming World you have to have a healthy extra A every day, which is a source of calcium - so is c cheese or milk. If you really don't eat either of these then you will struggle with that. However, there are vegan options such as almond milk which might work for you.

But Slimming World does encourage cooking from scratch so the rest shouldn't be a problem. You're supposed to have a third of your plate as speed food which is most fruit and veg, so liking that will help.
