"Green" disposable nappies

I've used kooshies nappies in the past but hating getting them washed and dried (did try honest but hard work with 2 in nappies). I can't keep up with the washing as it is! I'd love to try a nappy cleaning service but can't find one who delievers to our area (SK17 postcode, any suggestions?).

So I'm now looking into "greener" disposable nappies. Used nature boy/girl in the past but Safeways have stopped doing them now and Boots don't seem to do any green ones either. Seen lots of stuff about Moltex lately. Just wondered what people thought of the different green ones and if anyone knows where I can get nature by/girl?

Want to set up a reusable nappy scheme in Swansea i.e. collecting and washing nappies and leaving a fresh load to use in the meantime. Does anyone have any experience of these schemes? Either good or bad. Or any advice/help? Or is there anyone from Swansea out there who might be interested?

We are looking forward to hopefully trying Moltex in due course. We were pretty happy with Nature Boy and Girl, but would like a greener disposable and agree with bk that Moltex seem to fit the bill.
You can get NB & G in Waitrose as well as Sainsburys if you decide to try them Katherine.

we have recently switched to moltex oko. they are very good, better than nature b&g anyway. we do like the nature b&g biodegradable nappy bags though. also, moltex are more "green" than nature b&g as they have a more environmentally friendly manufacturing process.

we get them from The Nappy Lady .

Thanks for your advice. I guess I just chose the wrong brand first time round but it was 5 yrs ago now (!) and I guess things have moved on a lot since then. Thing is I spent quite a lot when I got the first batch and don't really want to fork out much again (especially as this will definitley be the last one!) just in case it doesn't work for me.

I wouldn't say I didn't get on with them - used them for over a year. It was only when DD arrived 19 mths after DS that something had to give. Just couldn't keep up with the washing and drying.

I think I will get some moltex and give them a try but having looked at lots of stuff about landfills again I'm feeling guilty again.

Chatted with DH last night and have decided to get a pack of terries. Bought some first time but never used them as got Kooshies instead, however they were probably the best thing I ever bought - DS used them as a comforter (easy to wash and swap), I used them under their heads to prolong sheet life, as mops for just about anything (in fact I keep them in the bedside cabinet now for me and DH IYKWIM) so at the end of the day if I wimp out they will still be used well, unlike if I buy more reusaeables and don't like them.

Terries should dry much more quickly and I can just lie them on the top of the rayburn to steam away as my biggest concern is getting them dry really but will probably use moltex overnight or something to make it a bit easier. Thanks everyone.

We found that tushies were rubbish! The tabs drive you mad and they leaked a lot. We use Moltex and they're fab - hardly ever leak. We order them through Little Green Earthlets (don't ask me to do a link - no idea how to do this!) and have used them more or less from day 1 with ds.

I remember those days, too, Mears. Breaking the ice on the nappy bucket in the mornings (lived in Thurso with no central heating!!), trying to fold terries that had frozen stiff outside, or worse, on a windy day finding a neat row of hems on the washing line and the rest of the nappy several gardens down the road. But the smell of freshly air-dried terries - I agree, gorgeous.

What's wrong with ordinary terries, washable liner and a nappy pin? Worked fine for me with 2 babies in nappies. Nothimg lovelier than a washing line full of bright white nappies.....those were the days (sigh) :}

Another vote for Tots Bots here and a big thumbs down for Kooshies!
Moltex are great. You can get them from smilechild.co.uk or spiritofnature.co.uk.
Nature boy/girl just don't compare and seemed a bit flimsy to me, but Sainsburys sell them along with biodegradable/compostable nappy sacks - v useful!
Greener disposables are a bit pricier than normal ones though and you're most likely to only find them on the net or mail order - so buy in bulk if you can. Or reconsider cloth - we got conned by Kooshies and thankfully found Tots Bots - huzzah!

Katherine sorry you didn't get on with the Kooshies, I haven't tried them but have heard that many people have problems with them, I don't think they are as absorbant as some of the other cloth nappies (we personally use Tots Bots and think they are wonderful). Have you thought about buying one or two different cloth nappies to try on your new baby and use them alongside disposables just to see if you get on with them any better than the Kooshies and if you don't like them you can always sell them on. I believe the Fuzzis that Bea mentioned are very quick drying which may make a difference.

oh dear! sorry that the Kooshies didn't work out... but have a look on the washable nappies part 3 thread in other subjects for discussion on the wonders (and not so wonders) of cloth nappies....

but failing to get you back onto the cloth nappy wagon (there are tons more nappies out there which are different to kooshies!!!!! ) i heartily reccommend moltex nappies... i would definitely steer clear from tushies as i found that their tabs were so sticky, that when you pulled them apart to fasten the nappy they would often rip the nappy.... moltex and are the only one for me!!!... along with my clothies... fuzzis, ellas house hemp, kissaluvs ....of course!!! i could go on and on!!!!

There's some called Tushies, with no gel stuff in them; available usually in healthfood shops, and Greenbaby (Islington). This is in London, but I don't know about availability outside. I'm sure I got some green nappies from Tesco's once. HTH!
