WHere to buy nice spectacles cheaply?

I need a new pair of glasses and had a very quick look in Boots this morning. As usual my infallible radar for the most expensive item locked on to a very nice pair of Calvin Klein ones. But the price with lenses was £225.

I know you can get designer sunglasses online at a cheaper price and was wondering if anyone knows of any similar sites which do spectacles?

I personally went to BHS last year and bought a nice pair of sunglasses. The frame was really good and I took them to my opticians and had my prescription filled. they look great and saved me about £100.00. Its absolutely ridiculous the amount of money they charge for frames, which are after all, just a bit of plastic!!! Its a racket.

Couldn't you buy the frames on line and go to an optician for the lenses?

Please can I add a word of caution.

There is a lot more to getting glasses fitted correctly than trying on the frames. Amongst other things, the centre point of the lens should be measured to ensure it is in the correct place in relation to your pupils. I don't see how they can do that if you buy online.

Incorrectly fitted glasses can work out very expensive in terms of your optical health.

Have a look at

www.glassesdirect.co.uk

This has had excellent reviews and they actually let you try the frames out.

JanH, you always come up trumps with the online recommendatioms! The Calvin Klein frames I saw in Boots for £229 are only £99 on the bargain specs site!

am definitely going to check style numbers etc tomorrow and then order online.

yeah, the good thing about getting them in a real life shop is that when you pick them up they will make sure they fit you ok, and can make any adjustments

Mind you I would want to try them on first - maybe you should have a trying-on session in a shop first and subtly write the style numbers down!

not sure about glasses online... because how would you send them your prescription?

how about specsavers, then you could get 2 for 1... you could get some sunglasses and ordinary glasses...
