Mix and match worktops

I want to add an additional short length of worktop to my kitchen (diagram added with new section in green). I want it to be like a breakfast bar but in full width as at the moment there is a tumble dryer just sitting there next to the fridge (which is the square in the corner).

We are planning to move in the next 12 months so I don't want to pay out to replace all the worktops, however the existing worktop is old and proving difficult to match. Would it look really odd if I ordered a length of worktop that was completely different? Like a wood effect laminate when the rest of the kitchen is dark speckly laminate?

I would do as PP have suggested but I would go for something other than wood look alike laminate. If your other is a dark speckle I would use white marble or something light and sparkly.

If money is an issue though, Ikea have a cheap, plain white worktop which would also do the trick.

The more different the better - but not wood effect - it just looks so plasticky

I agree - think of it as a bar, not an extra bit of worktop!

So it could work if I it was a completely different worktop, got a couple bar stools and made it a feature so it was like a breakfast bar rather than an addition?

I think the only way to make that work would be to make the new worktop completely different - wood / wood style would be the best bet - so that it looks purposeful.
