Best name labels for school uniform?

InBlackwaterWoods · 29/07/2018 19:41

Hi, my son starts P1 in August. And every bit of uniform has to be labelled! I'm getting confused at which labels to buy?
Any advice on sew in or iron on labels please? Which ones are the best? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks!

I used labels4kids www.labels4kids.com/clothing-name-labels/stick-on-name-labels. I liked them, easy and quick to use. Also the shoe one!

I use a sharpie.

I started out with the sew-in ones because I like the idea of that best ... and I still use them for expensive items like winter coats that you know are going to get quite a lot of outings, and you really don't want to have to replace. But I have 3 kids (soon to be 4) now and life is just too short for that much sewing (even though the younger ones obviously wear stuff with their older brother's name in it).

So then I got some Stikins, which although I was skeptical at first, have to admit they're pretty good - especially for stuff like water bottles/lunch boxes/ sports gear.

I also use a lot of Sharpie on anything it'll take on.

I just use whatever woven labels I can get decently priced online on uniform, stickins on pencil cases, water bottles and anything else. Never ever found an iron in set of labels that actually stayed stuck.

If I heat seal the ends of the woven labels I can often remove them and reuse them but to be honest motivation is rarely that high for me to want to do that.

Stickins are amazing though - we have some that have been on things like sandwich tupperware and in the dishwasher for years and years and are still legible and stuck fast. They work well stuck to the care labels on clothing as well - but I've just drilled my youngest child, who has dyspraxia, into looking for the woven name tape and putting that at the back of her clothes (I even have a batch made that say "back" for her weekend clothes) to help her dress a bit more independently so still fall back on sew-in ones for that reason.

For expensive things that I think might go walkies (our school's not generally got a problem with this but some really really do) I usually write the name on inside the collar in sharpie as well under the name tag (in case they remove it) and then write the name either inside the arm of a coat, or I've bought the school logo coats for next year and written it inside the rolly up hood pocket instead as they're reversible. Just stops anyone nicking it, taking the name labels out and claiming it for their own.

By the end of the year when it's summer dress and replacement trashed uniform season though it often just gets a sharpie or laundry marker (I like the ones Mothercare sell) waved at it if I'm honest!

Another vote for Cash 's. If you stitch them in properly they never come out. I had to cut them out before taking reusable uniform to the charity shop. We had to stitch them on everything including socks.

I've bought a mixture of sew in labels and stick in labels (from Woven Labels UK), plus had some cheap iron on ones from a couple of years ago.

Labelling depends on the type of item:

-Coat, logo jumpers/shirts, puddle suit are getting sew in (with extra sew in ones down a sleeve)
Supermarket clothes a quick sticker or two
Vests are getting a quick iron on to the actual ribbed fabric

labels4kids here too, the sticky ones. Get some with your mobile number printed on, handy for things that could get lost anywhere, not just school. Also second the sharpie pen for the inside back neck of jumpers. Nice big writing so that it's clear who's jumper it is (item of clothing most likely to be lost IMHO)

Stikins are great. I used them for years when my mum was in a care home. Never came off in the wash.

Also stickins deliver the next day.

Stikins. I used sew in ones the first year and they look lovely but stikins are so so so much quicker - you just stick them on the care label. I have never had one fall off (have melted one with the iron though) and they are easy enough to pull off when you pass things on. You can also stick them on anything and they stay on in the dishwasher.

DD is just moving into secondary (and started nursery at 3).

Cash's name tapes are still going strong. We have lost a few over the years but I usually spot loose ones when folding up washing and pop a few new stitches in.

"Stuck On You" I've probably had 3-4 orders over the years. The iron ons weren't as good this year (so I guess we re-ordered in 2017). The stick on labels and shoe labels are fine (very quick to stick on anything that moves out of the house - 2-3 year old ones are still surviving the dishwasher on snack pots etc). The iron on/sock labels aren't as robust. Admittedly I just chose black and white, but the names came off.

Ooh La labels - we had the circular ones. They stayed stuck on plastic and shoes - I didn't think to try them on clothing. They weren't cheap but I still have a few items from 2013 with some on.

I also swear by an Edding laundry pen (just spotted they are 1/2 price in Ocado). It seems a lot thinner than a sharpie (but maybe I am just a bit hopeless with a sharpie).

Sew in labels are best for me. I use labels4kids and they have a massive range of labelling stuff. I also like their button label gadget thing...sounds weird, makes sense when you see it!
Their personalised PE bags are long lasting too.

I haven't had one fall off yet.

Stamptastic for uniforms is ace, just doesn't work on trainers and stuff. But if you've got a white label it works a treat for years and years.

I've not been impressed with mynametags this year. They replaced mine and I'm still not impressed. They have creased or ripped off.

Sew in are best.
They'll stay in but they're also the easiest to get off again if you want pass the stuff on.
