I asked on another thread whether dreadful backache could be a sign of pregnancy.

The answer is yes, evidently. So now I've just given up smoking, have terrible backache and the most miserable cold I've had in years (now I know why dd was up half the night last week. poor thing! ).

I have a feeling that at 6 weeks preg I can't take anything at all to relieve these symptoms. Or can I? Need cheering up!

Oh lucy123, congratulations! How exciting, giving up smoking is a pain but it does get easier, honest. Hope lemons or something help.

Thanks all. Will get to the pharmacy later (bloomin siesta!! ).

One good thing about Spain is that they go overboard with the scans anyway - I have my booking in appt. on Friday.

Will get the lemons out.

Having a terrible cold was what confirmed my suspicions that I was pregnant with ds. I'd been exactly the same when about 5-6wks with dd. I can't remember what i took but I seem to remember really suffering like you are and thinking I couldn't take anything. I eventually went to the doctors to be told that my chest infection could be treated safely with antibiotics. I would advise that you either see your GP or ask a pharmacist. Hope you feel better soon and good luck with your pregnancy.

I feel the same way as you Lucy123, except that I am in my 9th week. I believe you can take any form of tylenol. Good luck! Drink lots of tea with lemon - that has helped me.

Well, congrats Lucy...even if it feels the opposite at the minute. you can safely take paracetamol for the cold symptoms and backache, but (can't remember if this was mentioned on your other thread) if the backache continues to be really painful, maybe you should get an early scan to rule out the remote possibility of an ovarian cyst or an ectopic pregnancy.
I had a three week stinker of a cold when about 20 weeks pregnant and it made my life hell. The pharmacist I saw told me it was safe to have Olbas Oil pastilles in pregnancy (but there is a recommended upper daily consumption of these, so check the packet) and they helped a lot with nasal congestion, which is always worse in pregnancy anyway apparently.
You could also try the homoeopathic remedy pulsatilla, which my GP prescribed, and that really helped with the snot.
I hope you can lay your hands on these easily in Spain. At least you should have a handy supply of really fresh lemons in due course...hope you feel better soon.

Hot water bottle on the affected area helps and you can take a painkiller that DOESN'T cross the placenta (low dose paracetamol) but it's best to check with your pharmacist.
