New born mattress advise

Hi all,

I’m currently in the process of organising everything for our first baby’s arrival in May. Does anyone have any advice about new born mattresses? I was given a brand new crib for newborns with a mattress that measures 80cmx50cm but looking online I can’t seem to find a single place selling mattresses that size: there’s also much conflicting info re; mattress depth. Most advice websites are saying that a newborn mattress should be firm and 8-10cm thick but I can’t seem to find any for bedside cribs that are more than 4cm thick??
Help, figuring this stuff out is so overwhelming!!

I wouldn't worry about it too much, easily lost with some diet changes after birth.
I gained 4st with our 1st, same with 2nd, 3rd just 2.5st. Stopped weighing myself with the twins though so no idea how much I gained overall with them but was 7lb heavier after birth than pre-pregnancy.

I am also worrying about this! I bought Chicco Next2me crib second hand and I bought some new mattresses for it (as per safety advice). Comparing them against the mattresses, these seem a lot softer and thinner. Although, I'd say 4cm vs 6cm. Are they supposed to be 8-10cm thick?!? I'm more worried about how soft they are. Thinking of returning them, but not sure what to do.

Moses Basket and crib mattresses are always thinner because they tend to be simple foam as they are used for such a short amount of time and when babies weigh very little. Thicker mattresses come into play for cots and cotbeds.

I was given both a second hand Moses basket and crib and bought basic John Lewis mattresses which have been great and used for two DC.

Ok that’s good to know. We aren’t using a Moses basket, just putting her straight into this cradle, it’s the same interior size as a bedside crib so I assume the mattress we have is sufficient since she won’t be in it for more than 6 months...I was thinking of buying a Chicco next2me crib mattress and putting it underneath to add some extra thickness but I don’t think I’ll bother. Thank you for the advise!!

I wouldn't add anything under the mattress of anything that comes with a specific mattress. It could affect the airflow and increase the risk of SIDS. Moses baskets and bedside cribs come with the correct mattress. They will be the right size which is really important. If you are buying second hand ALWAYS buy a new mattress with the correct dimensions. Cots and cotbeds usually have standard dimension mattresses. I've got a double sided mattress in our cot. One side for babies and then you flip it onto the other side when they are older.

I wouldn't add the extra mattress. I don't think the Lullaby Trust says anything about thickness and theirs is the best advice to follow from a safety POV. I don't think all of the reputable brands would be selling the 4cm thick mattresses as standard if it was incorrect.
IMHO (i.e. not data based/anything I've read) the extra mattress might make it too soft/allow the baby to sink too far into the mattress which would be bad.
