Nappy cream

Best nappy cream for a newborn? Im a FTM and due in 8 weeks and getting the last little bits together.... do I need nappy cream? Do I put it on baby from birth? Or just when needed?

Bepanthen is fab. Lasts ages and my son has never had a nappy rash. We’ve been using it on him since birth, just a little on every change.

Burts bees nappy cream. I got it on amazon but I think boots sell it too.
It's all I used on a newborn then moved onto sudocrem when she was a bit older.

Weleda calendula cream is absolutely amazing. Natural ingredients and has cleared up everything my little one might have had, including a little bit of nappy rash, sore face spots from wind chap etc. It's magic!

We used sudocream from time to time but it's not something you need really especially if you change baby frequently enough. DS is now 6 months and has never had nappy rash; there were a couple of days in the first few weeks when he did lots and lots of dirty nappies so we used cream as a preventative measure then but I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have hundreds of bottles/jars/tubes which I've never used.

Weleda, hands down. Apply at every change buy can skip the odd one and not worry too much. Keeps rash at bay but is super gentle. Absolutely not sudocrem, far too harsh on a newborn. Metanium applied very thinly if there’s actually nappy rash. And if you need to bring out the big guns for serious nappy rash eg. infected, HFM, post-diarrhoea - cavilon spray. Waleda Calendula fan here too- lovey natural stuff and a tube lasts forever.

I do like sudacrem as a first aid product but not so much a nappy cream.

Metanium is also useful too but I only use very occasionally

DS is 7 months and had cream applied to every nappy change. We use the asda nappy cream it's about £1.25 and brilliant. Works as well as sudocream

If we have money for more expensive cream, we use Child's Farm or Lucas' Paw Paw Ointment.

If we need to get something cheaper, we use metanium or sudocrem.

We then just moved onto the Sainsbury’s own brand which is £1.25

Yellow metamium cream was like magic, but only necessary once in a blue moon when she got nappy rash - not all babies are prone to it.

Sudcrem as a barrier cream, metanium as a treatment for nappy rash, 1% Canesten for thrush in nappy area (more common with girls, I believe).

We use bepanthen, it's brilliant! Not every single nappy change though - I'd say about 9/10 of them. Sometimes it's good to just let skin breathe and use nothing ime.

Top tip - if you can apply a bit of olive oil to baby's bum before they do their first poo, it makes it a dream to wipe off. Not always possible but we luckily managed to do it!

@ohwerehalfwaythere I love cheeky wipes and my 18 month old has never had nappy rash (aware it could obviously just be a coincidence!). I just use them with a bit of warm water to make life easier. Save so much money this way too!

@firstimemamma yup they're brilliant. My baby used to get it a lot but hasn't had it once since switching! And the money saving is nice too!

Another one for Weleda. I far prefer it to all other natural ones, and sudocrem. Goes on very easily and clears up redness in hours. All natural and in a metal tube (I think)
