What else do I need for baby? Clothes wise

Kicker764 · 21/08/2017 12:43

Baffled at how much of everything I need and don't want to over buy. Planning on doing a big shop visiting mothercare and the rest at the weekend and just need a little help as to what else I should buy and what I need more of. I already have the big items such as Pram cot and Moses just the clothes as the baby will be born early November so most likely need more cardigans etc?

So far I have
2 knitted cardigans 0-3
At least 20 bibs
5 pair socks
Pair of tights
8 hats
5 pair scratch mits
1 pair boots 3 pairs of shoes in 0-3 and 3-6
0-3 leggings
8 0-3 short sleeve vest
1 newborn short sleeve vest
6 newborn sleep suits (2 are thick velvety material)
3 upto 1 month sleep suits
3 0-3 sleepsuits and one thick babygrow?
1 0-3 dress
It seems like hardly nothing in the draws and know I will need a lot more just confused as to how much more in each sizes? X

You definitely don't need shoes or tights for a newborn! I'm due dc2 in November, will just be using vests (long and short sleeve), babygros and cardigans for the first few months, can't be bothered with putting socks and leggings on tiny limbs, too much faff for me! I'll have at least 10 vests, probably more like 20, and probably 10 babygros at least. My son pooed through everything frequently, the last thing I want is to run out of clean vests and feel pressure to wash a small few constantly.

Oysterbabe · 21/08/2017 13:00

I agree that you only need vests, babygrows, cardies and blankets to start with. DD was pretty sicky at first so I'd say at least 10-15 vests and babygrows.

Kicker764 · 21/08/2017 13:01

Thank you! How many vests and baby grows would you say in each sizes so I'm not rushed also!?

10-15 in each size?

Ime 2-3 newborn, 10-15 0-3, then worry about 3-6 later :)

Oysterbabe · 21/08/2017 13:05

Yeah there's really no need to stock up too much. You'll get loads of newborn sized stuff as presents and new clothes are just a few clicks and one day away.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 21/08/2017 13:21

You won't necessarily get newborn sizes as gifts, I hardly had any, people mainly bought 3-6 for us. When is your baby due and how quickly can you wash and dry clothes? I'd plan on 3 changes a day but it could be 1-7. Maybe consider getting a pack of cheap supermarket newborn babygros in cash and send someone to get you a refund/exchange if your baby is big. My babies were 7 7 and 7 2 and both wore newborn/0-1 until 6 weeks and then 0-3 until 4 months.

CaptWentworth · 21/08/2017 13:28

I had a 10lb-er, so he went straight into 0-1 and 0-3 bypassing newborn. We bought packs of M&S sleepsuits and vests. One pack in each size. White is also good because you can soak them in vanish/bleach without ruining them. Also little jogging trousers were really useful if you don't want them in baby grows all day. Long sleeved vest and jogging trousers is a good outfit combo.

arbrighton · 21/08/2017 13:34

no, fighting trousers on and off when newborns fill nappies so often and hate being changed, not worth it

depends on due date. Ds didn't wear a single newborn vest being boen end of june

But, we have needed 3 sleepsuits some days with leakage and spew

so, how much washing do you want to do...

noone bought newborn for us, and not much 0-3 either, mostly 3-6 onwards

PotteringAlong · 21/08/2017 13:37

Babies basically wear vests and babygros for at least the first 3 months - everything else is a bit of a waste!

Orangedaisy · 21/08/2017 13:46

Echoing other posters-please take the shoes/boots back. Complete waste of money for a newborn-they are a faff to get on and don't stay on even once you do get them on.

MeltorPeltor · 21/08/2017 13:52

I had nothing when DS arrived, online shopping during the middle the night feeds and a trip to the supermarket were welcome ways to break up the day.

Agree with previous posters- newborns need hardly anything, and they're much better in comfy things like vests and sleepsuits. A couple of packs of each to start you off then you can order/buy whatever else you need when baby arrives.

Also, my daughter is 5 months old and aside from a couple of dribble bibs (the triangle ones), she's never worn a bib (to feed) in her life. We use muslin cloths for EVERYTHING.

They're amazingly handy, and really cheap. And you just chuck them all in a hot wash. Cleaning up baby sick, spilled milk, stuffing down your bra for leaky boobs, an extra layer of warmth to wrap around them, a soother, something familiar to lay a baby down on when you're out and about. I would swap the bibs for muslins!

Oh, and I'd get a couple of pairs of Sock-ons. They go over the top of socks (or the feet of too-big sleepsuits) and keep them in place. No more lost socks!

MagicMoneyTree · 21/08/2017 14:16

We're expecting DC2 so we've got what we need already, but when I go through the bags of clothes I'll be looking for about 10 newborn vests (short sleeved) about 10 sleep suits/babygros, a couple of hats and a few cardigans. Will do the same for 0-3 and again for 3-6. People bought us sets and I wished I'd returned them for the 6-9/9-12 month sizes as I didn't really use clothing sets and proper outfits until 6+ so the smaller sizes didn't get as much use as I'd have liked.

Foggymist · 21/08/2017 14:20

Yeah I returned almost all gifts and got them in 6-9, 9-12 sizes, so handy for when people stopped giving gifts!

BewareOfTheToddler · 21/08/2017 14:34

Echoing PPs, we were given loads of outfits as presents - not all suitable for the time of year when they fitted DS either, iyswim, so some didn't get worn. He was 8lbs 8oz, and still needed newborn for the first month or so.

The following were about right for us for a September baby, all in newborn/up to one month size:

10 vests (short-sleeved)
10 long-sleeved sleepsuits (with built in feet)
2 outfits
2 pairs of socks, to be worn with outfits
2 cardigans
2/3 hats (cotton)
Lots of muslins
4 sleeping bags (if your baby is big enough)

Moanyoldcow · 21/08/2017 14:55

You need way more sleepsuits. I got through about 4 a day for the first couple of weeks.

user1478902502 · 21/08/2017 16:19

Personally I would hold off buying too much of anything. My 8lb 5oz baby was too long for newborn baby grows/sleepsuits/vests from day 1 and has outgrown her 0-3 in length now at 4 weeks luckily I was given loads of 0-3 secondhand ones so don't feel too bad cutting the feet off them. I'm glad I didn't waste money buying loads of newborn stuff though.

niknac1 · 21/08/2017 16:43

The baby vests and suits are really good value in Asda, they wash and tumble dry well. Have a look as anything else is a faff which you may wish to cut out

Tfoot75 · 21/08/2017 16:51

Buy the bare minimum that you need for hospital bag / few days after and see what you get as gifts. No way of knowing which size you'll need as some are in newborn for a few weeks and some skip straight to 0-3, my dd2 didn't fit one up to 1 month sleepsuit at birth but was only 8lb 4 so pretty average - take a couple of each size, if baby is sick a lot it won't matter putting them in something too big for a few hours!

itsgoingtoofast · 21/08/2017 17:15

I would recommend getting a couple of little nightgowns with no poppers to negotiate in the middle of the night! Makes life much easier in the very early days when you are still changing in the night. Like this:

m.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-baby-organic-cotton-bunny-bundler-white/p/1713650

In the same vein I would also recommend zippy suits like bonds wondersuits. They wash and dry amazingly well too and have built in hands and feet covers that can fold back and forwards. Quite pricey though, we were given one as a gift and I loved it. Also did similar at one point at a fraction of the price.

I also did the swapping outfit sizes second time round, makes sense to wait and see what you get and juggle. we mainly got 3-6 month gifts too.

Also as a PP said muslins will be your friend, I used them way more than bibs. They more came into play at the weaning stage.

I would also recommend over sized muslins for swaddling too.

Another thing I learnt the hard way was faffing about with jackets in car seats and prams. Cardis and hats, cosy toes and blankets are much more convenient, safer and it's easier to regulate temperature without disturbing a sleeping baby!

itsgoingtoofast · 21/08/2017 17:16

*Aldi did the cheaper zippy suits!

Aldi Muslins and hooded towels are very good and great value. They have them in at the moment as part of the baby event. They also have nice triangle bibs.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 22/08/2017 17:40

I'm due DC2 in Nov, he'll be in a mix of:

long sleeve vests, tracksuit bottoms and cardis,

and

sleepsuits

Get some zip up babygros! Bonds Wondersuits from ebay

BendydickCuminsnatch · 22/08/2017 17:41

Ooh itsgoingtoofast we both mentioned Wondersuits! Will have to try and find some Aldi ones - it's hard with Aldi because I never know when they'll have certain stuff in??
