Cot mattress - recommendations please!

There seems to be such a huge difference in price for a 120 x 60cm mattress from the different retailers. I don't consider myself to be daft, but since I am struggling to understand the difference between the different types maybe I am!

Has anybody got a tried and tested (and reasonable priced) recommendation for a stupid first timer?!

I bought the basic mothercare mattress for £29.99. It is waterproof and foam and looks like it did when it was brand new. My daughter slept on it for 2 years with no problems and she is now in a bed. When you consider the size and weight of your child it seems a bit OTT to buy a sprung mattress especially that following advice I am now replacing it with a new one for my DS. I did consider all the various air flow mattresses but if you are going to put a waterproof cover on it, just what is the benefit? HTH

I bought a Purflo mattress and although it was pricey, it was one of the best purchases we made. It's a bit weird - it's like a mesh stretched over a frame so you can adjust the tension and leave it a bit slack to discourage them rolling onto their front, adn to avoid a flat head. It's hard for the baby to overheat, it's machine washable (and I couldn't believe the amount of crap and dust that builds up inside) so it's good for avoiding respiratory problems. You can put a bowl of inhalant under it and it flows through, which is great when they've got a snuffle. And it's the only mattress I'd consider buying second hand because of the way it's all washable and isn't like anything else out there.

I'll be watching this thread, for dd I just bought a cheap foam mattress, but I now have a second hand cot bed for ds (due in dec) but as he'll be in it longer as we'll use it as a bed I'm looking at some of the sprung ones, but argos seem to be much cheaper than mothercare, still trying to find out more though. But dd was on her cot mattress for under 2yrs so think a foam matress would be fine for that.

i got a mid range one from ikea-they are 60X120cm and a matress pad too. it is so handy when things spill, leak etc as you can wash and dry it and still protect the matress. think it was about £50 and the pad about £10.

I went for John Lewis - very happy with it. Lasted DS for 2.5 years, no signs of wear, so will be flipped for the next one.

I went for a sprung, hypo-allergenic (good choice as DS has excema) one over a foam one as we have a cotbed and I knew it would be used for a good few years. It is also reversable and there is a layer that comes off the top so it can go in the washing machine.

It is a really good quality one from Babies R Us. It is currently £80 but that is a cotbed size (which I think is bigger than 120?)

I would recommend getting a decent mattress tbh, not a cheap foam one.

For DD's cotbed I also went for a sprung mattress with a zip-off top cover. It looks as good as new 2.5 years on.

We have this sprung one, price £45 from Boots online. We love it and found it was the best value when we were looking about 18months ago!

Personally I didn't want to take the risk with a foam or sprung mattress because of the fire chemical toxins. There are a number of more natural baby mattresses which I think are best and not too much more money when you think how log they will be using the for. I got the Little green sheep cot mattress 60x120 size cost us £115 www.thelittlegreensheep.co.uk/Mattresses/Cot-Cot-Bed-Mattresses/ or you could try abaca but bit more expensive. Hope that helps, it's a bit of a minefield!

Sorry to hijack - quick mattress question!

I will replace my crib mattress for DC2, by 6 months when they move into the cot bed, should that be a new mattress too? And pushchair?

Current recommendations are that new baby = new mattress for anything a new child goes into, wether that's a crib, cot or pram vallinnapod
