What seat to use when out and about?

We started potty training DS (2y 2mo) a couple weeks ago, and he's been doing really well so far. But I'm conscious we've benefited from being home all day and not really "tested" it with days out yet.

We're planning a trip to a farm this weekend, but not sure what to do about a potty during the day? Do I carry around his little potty we use at home? Get one of those travel ones, that look like a little suitcase? Or a training seat that can go on top of the public toilets?

We had a potette. Can be used as a potty or a seat.

You can but disposable bags for it, or a silicone insert. Alternatively we used to find a grate in a car park and sit it on that for wees!

No we haven't @Morred, with lockdown I haven't really had the opportunity and suddenly thought about it as we have outings planned this weekend!

I have a potette coming this afternoon so I can try him on it at home a couple times so it's not totally new to him by the weekend. But good point about the hand dryers.

Have you tried him in toilets? Mine is terrified of the hand dryer noise so we either go in an individual disabled/changing places one (if clearly labelled to be used for children/babies) or in the baby change area (if separate from the main loos) so I can tell him there won't be any "hoovers". We use a potette and if there isn't a suitable big toilet to use the insert on, he can just use the potty somewhere discreet.

We loved our potette too! We took it camping with us for years!!!

Potette is excellent. Ours is still in the boot of the car - quite handy for emergencies even for primary school kids.

What did you do for loo breaks, just have them use a regular toilet?

We have a carry potty that we would take with us. Once she reached about 2.5 though if we know there are going to be toilets where we are going we stopped bothering as she preferred to wee on a toilet so I'd just hold her on the loo.

I taught DS to wee standing upwards, but he’s quite tall.

Pottette is brilliant! My son is 5 and we still take it on longer days out. It was really good for holidays too.

We used a pottette and at age 4 still have it now for long walks/places where there are no toilets

We used a my carry potty. It was good because you can seal it if you can’t find anywhere to dispose of the contents 🤢, and you can use it anywhere if can’t find an actual toilet.

OP, look at the pottette, it folds down and fits in a back back its not a normal potty. I have it in my backback with snacks, change of clothes etc

I used to keep a potty in the car, just a normal one and they always tried for a wee before we went anywhere. But I also used to put them on the toilet at home so would just use a normal toilet when out - made life much easier!

We used potentate too. Much more convenient than a potty on a day trip and it absorbs all the contents too

We have a potette, very handy for trips out as it can be used as a potty or as a seat on a regular toilet. It folds and because they wee into a bag it’s a bit easier with cleanup than emptying a normal potty.

Hm thanks. I guess I could take the potty and stick it in the bottom of the buggy. Though I wouldn't really be taking the buggy around otherwise.

Maybe I'll get an insert for the big toilet and try it over the next few days and see how he is on it

I think it really depends on your child and his preferences. If taking his existing potty is a practical option I would perhaps try that first.

My DS is the same age as yours and we've also been going a couple of weeks. I bought one of the My Carry Potties (small suitcase style) but I don't think he's quite ready to use it yet. It is really small compared to his potty at home, so a bit fiddly to get the sitting position right. We had a wee accident yesterday while on a walk and I tried to put him on it immediately afterwards and he hated it, although I imagine he'll get used to it in time. My DS seems quite capable of holding on so for several hours so for the moment we're mainly sticking to shorter outings and making sure he uses the potty before he goes. He doesn't want to use the insert on the big toilet at home yet so for now I wouldn't consider a portable version.
